hey rei (it rhymes)

Rei really wishes Kaworu weren't so weird. She doesn't know how to read him at all and it frustrates her to no end. Rei doesn't "get" "normal people" in the first place, so certainly Kaworu is even more of an enigma to her. That unpredictability, while she's extremely happy about everything he's done for Shinji, keeps her from letting up on her protectiveness toward her brother. Kaworu has so much power of Shinji's emotion that it's difficult not to be extremely angry when he makes the wrong decisions. It wouldn't take much for him to utterly crush Shinji and do irreparable damage to his emotions, so she doesn't want to allow herself to get too close. She must remain vigilant, standing far away so she can better comfort Shinji should something go wrong.

That said, she knows they have some sort of connection in their past lives, and the idea of getting chummy with him isn't totally unappealing. But Rei doesn't let anybody in, and Kaworu is no different. For what it's worth though, the closer he gets to Shinji, the closer he's going to get to Rei as well. Even though it's a weird thing for her to think about, a future where she has two brothers instead of one isn't such a far off idea.

Is that...is that a friend, maybe? It's certainly possible. For the first time in forever she finds herself deliberately seeking out human contact in the form of Banagher. When she receives an echo, the idea of running to discuss it with him always seems to spring into her head. It isn't something she can explain easily, and it deeply troubles her to know that maybe she isn't as content sitting alone with her thoughts as she thinks she is. Banagher is nice to her, and is a decent mind to bounce ideas off of and discuss her echoes with. He isn't loud or pushy and doesn't try to pry into her life or get too close, which really helps her feel comfortable around him.

If only he could laugh at one of her jokes.
