Though L's only talked to Sam once, he's interesting to him, if only because not many people can tolerate my detective's insanely pedantic way of talking a point to death. For a human character he's extremely outside the norm and maybe this is why he's drawn to things that are... not. So robots, aliens, and demons all fall into that category, therefore Sam does, and if he doesn't mind being approached initially as a sort of subject of study by a very tactless and curious researcher, they'll get along fine.
Past that initial layer, quite a lot is possible; I've seen CR with L go all sorts of directions, and I'm usually thrilled with the results.
