The Canon Expies Meme

SAVE THE EARTH is a world tragically devoid of some of our most beloved works of fiction! (good thing too, otherwise reincarnates would be even more fucked up!) Or rather, they exist until someone apps from them, at which point they retroactively don't. But don't feel too bad for this Earth's inhabitants - just as no niche in nature is left open long before life fills it, other, similar fiction has taken the places of the canons we know!

Okay, so since we're all playing modern AUs most of them are familiar with pop culture, right? But since some are off-limits, we've got to get creative. Comment with a little about the expy - or expies, maybe there's more than one - of your character's canon. Or other canons. It can be more or less similar, by the same or different authors, have suspiciously similar titles or anything else! Be as straightforwards or detailed as you wish.

man, I never actually beat that one, so much confusing time shenanigans. I got so lost once I got to the dungeon where you need to wear the birdcloak.

LW has the coolest tunnel underworld though so nothing will ever beat it in my mind u_u also sweet bossfights.

Magic the Gathering fills in all the holes that the YGO card game could have filled, and got itself an anime. The anime is on it's 4th series now, each series covering an expansion of the game. The basic storylines are the same, where the card game turns out to be linked to something supernatural which starts the group of players on a crazy journey of high stakes card game tournaments where the line between game and reality is blurred.

and for some reason, series 3, the game was played on motorcycles.

And they made the 2nd series based on Unglued.

within the wonder film cosmos (wfc) is home to a series of movies stretching from ~2008, and features: ferric man, the inconceivable glop, ferric man 2, thunaraz, colonel states: the first vindicator, vindicators (named vindicators unite for release in the UK).

comics:
the remarkable wasp-boy (featuring a ritchie radcliff; famed villains include blue bottle, who didn't translate very well to film, and prof cal, who bears a remarkable resemblance to a certain ginger haired, sunglasses wearing musician.)
the inexplainable y-guys (originally simply titled "the y-guys", it later underwent a name change.)
the absolute thunaraz (and thunaraz, the god of thunder, has an asshole ~brother~ named loptr.)
colonel states
the inconceivable glop (featuring a doctor simon seal.)
... ferric man THIS IS HARDER THAN I EXPECTED, OKAY. someone come up with something better for iron man, please sobbing. goddamn, marvel.

Earthbound Blade, though. The sword actually matched your Woamote (pronounced whoa-mote).

Dark Alteration is a series of third-person shooter RPGs developed by SynthWare, starring Captain Paster in his/her quest to fight the Harvesters. They were remarkably popular, although the ending was extremely controversial, with fans becoming incredibly angry. SynthWare is also the creator of Magi Era, a series of fantasy RPGs, with the third game to come soon.

LORD OF THE RINGS

[personal profile] 15minuteslate 2013-06-14 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
...is now a space epic entitled Saturn's Lord. It follows the journey of a young alien boy as he travels from extensively world-built planet to extensively world-built planet (with its own language and culture and history) trying to destroy a small device that has fallen into his possession. It once powered an entire fleet of starships belonging to a conquering warlord, and has an AI-consciousness of its own that plays on the fears/dreams of the bearer. The story draws heavily from Old Norse mythology, both in themes and the planets' aesthetic, and is extremely soft sci-fi.

Basically, Tolkien wrote the sci-fi story, and Lewis wrote Out of the Silent Lands, a trilogy mostly focusing on Arthurian elements.

I'll have to remember this; I'm trying to get a character together who's going to be a big Lewis fan.

YUP the way I see it, Lewis never branched out into sci-fi? The Narratives of Jaromir was his Christian-themed story for children, and Out of the Silent Lands, Pearl and Ra, and This Awful Might are his reimagining of the Arthurian mythos.

ANY OTHER DETAILS ABOUT LEWIS'S WORKS ARE UP TO YOU THOUGH spoilers I never read past OOtSP /shame

In the interest of full disclosure, I've only ever read Narnia, Screwtape, and his nonfiction theology stuff. I think I started Silent Planet once, but never really got into it. So the stuff that's up to me is basically the stuff I already know about! Huzzah!

oh shit if I ever finish Aqua's app she's a huge fan of Saturn's Lord, and sometimes gets accused of just writing more Tolkien-ripoffs

...I just snorted when I realized that would be "S&M X" for FF10 and "S&M7: Crisis Core". This gets worse when Serphatina's doubtless fabulous double Ds in black leather cross harness gets involved.

/Riku swears he did not choose his look based on this thing.

...I just realized if Riku was reading those books then this probably influences how he percieves his echoes. snap. ...His favorite character may have been Terra. Or rather, Geo, the super strong guy who went around beating baddies up. Probably didn't think much of Landis, the boy who was corrupted by the dark lord Nirabon. xD Or or Mickey. Idek. I NEED AN EXPY FOR DISNEY.

Also, I'm curious, how much would Aqua screw over the BBS trio? XD

This. Riku is a fan-- books and the whole 3+3 movie shenanigans. *A* I love how Tolkien now gets to write a whole different obscure fancy alien language/script, racial genealogy, and appendix for SEVERAL different worlds. Not to mention describe millions of different singular trees in the worlds' landscapes. xD
