LET'S [test] DRIVING

IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN, YOU KNOW THE DRILL. Here's a few options, all stolen shamelessly from previous iterations.

> The Park. Man, what a nice day out. Why not enjoy it? I'm sure -- shit, yep, there's some echo monsters or whatever they're called.
> The Mall. Exactly what it says on the tin! Dodge the hordes of teenage mallrats or take part, whichever suits your tastes.
> Rainy Day. Agh, it's fucking awful out. And is it raining those vermilion things?? Now you've got an Echo to contend with on top of everything else. Find some shelter, quick!
> Arts and Crafts Fair. WILL THE KITSCH OVERWHELM YOU

or make up your own whatever this is basic and just for the purposes of getting a new test drive up.

[ You know what a nice day in the park could use? Activists! That's right citizens, it is time to better yourself and learn about social justice via pamphlets from a stern looking blond fellow. He's even on his best behavior- since this is no rally, just an attempt at recruiting more volunteers! And he's learned that potential volunteers don't really like it when you get fierce and passionate and you know, sometimes your voice just rises because you're burning up with righteous indignation-

And by then any would be volunteers have fled for cover.

SO instead he has put on his best smile, though there's still much of that burning passion flickering in his fierce blue eyes. Will you take a pamphlet?

[ ...Oh, this is always fun. Raul hasn't been keeping his ear to the ground as much as he'd like with the radical scene in the past couple of months, having been distracted with the Numbers Club's business and his own work.

What the hell? Have a dude in shades approaching and tossing a little flick of a wave.
]

Hey. What organization are you with?

[he isn't sure if he knows or recognizes this guy or not--at least not by sight--he runs into so many people in this scene. but still, he's clearly interested.]

We're a student-run political activist organization with the local university. We represent the friends of the friendless, and strive for the rights of equality for all people. [ Which answers like four different questions that he did not ask. ]

In short; I'm a representative from Activate Morality in Institutions and Society.

[just gonna look at the pamphlet...]

Gotta work from the ground up, right? "We want no condescending saviors to rule us from their judgement hall", as it goes...

[hm. he runs into a lot of people but. there's a sense of vague familiarity here. not echo-y deja vu, just...hmmmm.]

Sorry - have we met?

[Yoko's on a post-run cooldown when she notices the guy with the pamphlets. Normally she doesn't stop for this kind of guy because a weird bunch of them turned out to be religious, but this guy looks safe. No crosses or anything, that's a good sign. So she slows to at least look at the pamphlet, her face curious if not terribly ~burning with passion.]

What're these for?

I'm glad you asked. [ Because that was a thing he was told to say, by people who know he's actually completely socially inept at this sort of thing unless he's standing on top of a soap box "inspiring" people. There's something to be said for Enjolras; he certainly knows how to do that. ]

I'm handing out pamphlets on behalf of the Activate Morality in Institutions and Society group. We're a club with the local university, however you don't have to be a student there to better yourself and get involved. [ Don't worry, he has enough burning passion to go around. ]

Right now we're looking for volunteers- we have a rally coming up to protest Bill 1178, the approval of which would allow the "therapeutic" treatment of homosexuality in minors. Children- who are still struggling to find themselves and who they are being indoctrinated to believe that as a person they are wrong to want to know; the measures of which could cause irreparable psychological damage. [ Someone's voice may have risen just a little bit in fury, there. But only a little. ]

[ It heartens him to see such enthusiasm for his pamphlets, and he squares his shoulders a little, straightens up and forces himself to remember that a smile should not be a grimace. ]

It is good to see someone else with so much enthusiasm.

[ even though it's a nice enough day, the sun beating down in full force, marius is still draped in a too large locke city university sweater, the oddity made complete with the grinning bliz polar bear printed on the front. he's contemplating the lecture he's just emerged from, one more specifically focusing on the intricacies of the parisian sewer systems, when he nearly ends up bumping into someone. it's a close call, marius stopping just a couple of paces away from where the blonde is standing, and he grins bashfully, after a moment noticing the pamphlets in the other's grasp.

it's only polite to take one, isn't it? clearing his throat once, he takes a pamphlet from the man, haphazardly flipping through it; taking note of some of the more... extremist idealism. ]
You're looking for volunteers, then?

[ a tilt of his head, as he shoves the pamphlet away into the messenger bag slung over his side. the crunching sound as the paper folds is too loud in his own ears, and he barely suppresses a wince. ]

I'm Marius.

[ Why on earth someone was inclined to wear a sweater in this heat existed in a realm well beyond Enjolras's understanding. He himself is well dressed- almost borderline formal, but not overly so. His shirt has buttons; and maybe at some point or another there was a tie involved but it's long gone now. His jeans are clean, black and fitted. His clothes all look like they were made for him; though then again, he was the sort of person that perhaps clothes were made for.

When Marius almost bumps into him, he turns. Scrutinizes the other with blue eyes that narrow just slightly. But he softens himself, or at least he tries. Though there's still a sharp edge to his expression. Maybe it's just something that couldn't be helped.
]

Always. To create change, one first has to expose the issues. And to do that, it has to start in the hearts of the people. Which as you can no doubt guess, requires a street presence.

[ Is this the part where he's supposed to say his name back? Yes? Well, he doesn't.

Woops.

[Oh, god. Grantaire's attention has been drawn, but it would have been hard for it to have not been. All he'd wanted was to do quick life drawings of passersby, but then the passerby had stopped walking and started handing it out papers, and before Grantaire knew it, he'd been too curious not to go and get one.

That had been, probably, a mistake.

He takes the pamphlet from the man - god, his expression is all seriousness and dedication and fire - and turns his head down to read it. After a moment, he cracks a grin.]

And what, exactly, is a piece of paper supposed to do about any of this?

[ There's something about the other's grin that already sets him on edge- and then he opens his mouth and oh, it's worse. He does his best not to prickle, and instead he forces a thin smile. It's a question he's heard dozens of times, it shouldn't phase him. Tells himself that it doesn't, and counts back from five inside of his head quickly just in case. ]

A piece of paper- nothing. It's just a piece of paper; but everything is "just" a simplicity, or an idea until a person gives it breath and life. That simple "piece of paper" is an idea, and a dozen voices crying out to be heard. You can't start a movement without the people, and you can't rally the people without offering the information. What it is then, supposed to do is offer information. Plant the seed, so that the blossoming of change can take root.

[Grantaire has to push his tongue against the roof of his mouth to keep from laughing. He doesn't want to laugh in this man's face, really, he doesn't, especially when he's still hoping to get a chance to draw that impassioned expression somehow. It's hard to find that exact look anywhere. There's something nostalgic about it, in a vague way. Maybe too vague to even be considered "nostalgic"...]

Hmmmmm. [He draws the syllable out, looking down again at the flyer.] The only voice I hear is you. Have you had any success with these papers? Anybody willing to become this mystical "People"? [He enunciates that last word, as if he's trying to verbally indicate that capital "p".]

[ Heaven help you if you laugh at him, he's already gaining irritation rapidly just from the attitude the other is giving off. Even so, Enjolras forces himself to smile- though it isn't an expression that reaches his eyes, and for it he ends up looking more condescending than friendly. ]

I've had sign-ups for volunteers. So yes, I would say I have had success. [ It takes him a hell of a lot of effort not to snap these words. Really, the other should be applauding him. ]

[Grantaire's observant enough that he can tell he's starting to grate on nerves. He can't help but grin a little wider at that. After all, he's used to carefully examining faces and knowing telltale signs of emotion, just from his art studies. The forced smile is particularly nice. With one hand, he folds the flyer and shoves it into his jacket pocket.]

In that case, I might have to come by these meetings of yours and see the poor souls first-hand. What, exactly, are your goals?

[It was a beautiful day in the park, and Pia was sitting under a tree watching a guy trying to hand out pamphlets for far too long. At this point she was certain she could try for her degree in People Watching, but this man was far too interesting. Or uninteresting, as everyone else seemed to think, since she hadn't seen a single person walk away with a pamphlet yet. Of course she could always go over there and talk to him. Certainly she probably knows more about his cause than he does. It could be fun.

She gets to her feet, brushing the dirt off her exceptionally chic ensemble, before trotting over to him, a winning smile on her face.]
