Danny feels pretty bad for Shinji--both because of the circumstances of their first meeting (he tries not to think about it if he can, there is nothing more embarrassing) and because of how displeased he seems to be with the network. No one's really happy to be in the numbers club but Shinji really seems to dislike it, for some reason.

(It's because he didn't get any cool powers out of it, just all the danger that comes with it. Poor kid, Danny doesn't blame him.)

That said, he's glad to know a freshman (HAHA SENIORITY, YESSSS) who doesn't know of his prior reputation as No Pants Kid. Shinji's pretty alright by his book! It might be a bit awkward to hang out with him just for the hell of it, but he'd be alright with sitting with him at lunch.
