So, what does Alex really think about Xander's character?

After thinking Xander was grumpy and hostile in their first conversation, Alex has warmed up to him quite a bit. I think the initial grumpiness even made him see Xander as a straight shooter, someone who's not going to fake interest or courtesy, which is pretty cool to Alex.

He thinks that if Xander's other self was really a danger to others, there had to be a good reason for it; but he also thinks that Xander doesn't have enough information to know for sure that he was. (Which amuses me, because I deliberately gave Alex an echo that would make him think the Yeerks won in Ax's world, and he hasn't gotten any contradictory memories yet, so he completely believes they did.) And even if his other self was evil, Alex meant everything he said about having a choice in this world. I also think he's beginning to suspect what fighting a war can do to people--what it did to Ax and his friends--and that the good guys in Locke City need people who can do what has to be done, even if they end up not feeling admirable anymore. I doubt he could put that into words, though.

He thinks other-Xander's world is fascinating, and he wonders why he hates his name, but is too tactful to ask. :)

Yeah, Xander tends to be rather straight forward most of the time and he is quite loyal.

I wonder if he'll change his opinion after seeing Xander being sadistic or manages to get more information out of him regarding his echoes.

Well, he won't be bothered by the question about disliking his full name, but he'll probably grimace a bit while answering.
