[Gabriel had been eyeing the queue, and the man at the front, wondering if it was worth waiting or coming back later. Coming back, he decides, as he sets the paper he'd selected down and turns on his heel, at the same time as a younger man decides to leave. Close to him as they leave, he hears him speak, and his lips twitch back into a smile.]

Better to support the local economy, though. [Unfortunately that it's a small local store went against them today; a bigger store would have had another till to open.] And think of the poor cashier! I thought she was going to cry for a moment there.

[Fil gave Gabriel a wry smile back.] You have a point but online is just too convenient. I only came because I needed those pencils today.

[He shook his head at the mention of the poor girl; his sympathies were entirely with her.] That poor girl. She had far more patient then I would have in that situation. I would have decked him one already and probably gotten myself fired as a result.
thebalrogslayer: (Serious)

[personal profile] thebalrogslayer 2014-01-21 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that convenient, then! [But Gabriel laughs. Maybe he's too much of an old fogey to be as enamoured with online shopping.]

She shouldn't have had to be patient for so long; her manager should have come sooner. [Gabriel purses his lips, frowning faintly at the injustice there. And then it returns to his normal smile.] But in that case it's just as well that you're not the one on the tills!

[Fil grins as well and sticks his hands into his pocket.] Well, it gives me an excuse to get out of the house for some fresh air.

[Then he frowns too at the reminder of the manager.] Yeah, where was that guy anyway? He should at least have taken over the till or something.

I hope he had some good reason for not being there. [And his frown's back as he wonders if he needs to go back and - no. This is not a time when he can be a hero. Shaking his head, he returns his attention to the young man beside him. There's something familiar about him that he can't quite put his finger on.]

Where will you go to get your pencils now, if you need them today?

Or some people are just cowards and don't want to face up to situations like that. [Fili makes a face. It could be for the manager or for his own current situation.]

Bleh. I came here today because it was closer to my house. Now I'll have to go to the other side of the city for them. IF they have them at all.

[personal profile] thebalrogslayer 2014-01-23 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[Tilting his head at the mention of coward, Gabriel makes a soft noise at the back of his throat, thinking.] Someone else could have stepped forward to help her. [It's said neutrally - neither of them did so he can't lay blame. Just a thought.]

He won't be in there all day. Get a drink and then go back - it'll save you time in the long run. [He suggests. That's what he's planning on doing anyway, even though he could probably get paper elsewhere. He doesn't want the business to miss out because of this.]

[personal profile] moreweaponsthanyou 2014-01-24 09:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...probably... [Now Fili's squirming inside a bit at the thought. But a childhood of kids bullying HIM has his default reaction to situations like these is to stay neutral and out of the way.]

That's not a bad idea. I could probably use a coffee.

There's a good place outside of the --mall, if you go left out of the entrance that way. [He points in the direction he means. Mall is said with a degree of hesitation, shopping centre still sounds more natural to him, but using native term normally saves him from being questioned.

He also likes the coffee shop because he's badgered them into making tea how he likes it, but that's by the by.

Sounds good. You a tea drinker or a coffee guy? [Fil caught the small hesitation and raised his eyebrow a bit, but declined to ask about it.]
thebalrogslayer: (Grin)

[personal profile] thebalrogslayer 2014-01-25 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Green or white tea, but it can be hard to find it done well here. [Gabriel grins. What's that term the kids use these days? Hipster. Not that he normally had much of a better reaction at home - what's white tea, can you brew it for half an hour, where does the milk go?]

What about you?

I'm Gabriel, by the way.

[personal profile] moreweaponsthanyou 2014-01-26 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
English tea is more common, yeah. Due to the fact that Brits can't live without it and so bring it everywhere they go. [Fil grins in reply, remembering a classmate back in University who literally could not live without it.]

Me? I'm a coffee drinker mostly, though I don't object to tea now and then.
