Questions Meme

As first posted here by Emely!:

1. Make a thread for yourself in this post, listing the characters you play and your own name.
2. Go find someone's thread to jump and ask them A QUESTION. The question can be anything, RP related is common, of course, but not necessary. Who do you want to app most? What does Character A think about Character B? What's your favorite flavor of icecream?
3. Answer all questions asked of you! Once you have answered, end your response with a question for the person who first questioned you. This is important to keep the discussion going and going.
4. This goes back and forth indefinitely until someone gets tired and can't reply anymore.
5. Have a lot of fun! ♥

Season 2 begins tomorrow, all, and there've been plenty of developments and new blood since the first round - get the words flowin', get to know/re-know some of your gamemates, and/or simply shoot the breeze~

TL;DR AHOOOOY

[personal profile] darkinferno 2014-03-22 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually didn't necessarily have too much in mind when I initially apped Riku, lmao. In November I was enabled by Bri (Nick, Varric), Kas (Axel), and DC (Chell, Larxene), and THAT WAS PRETTY MUCH ALL IT TOOK AHAHA. My mindset was "YES HIDEOUS CR LET'S DO IT \o!!"

Coming up with his reincarnation: Riku was pretty difficult to do the initial reincarnation work on, if only for the sole reason that throughout the series you see him All Over the Board. He's arrogant, he's humble. He's overconfident, he's convinced that he's shit. He thinks he can do no wrong, he thinks that every step he's ever taken was in the wrong direction. If I'd been playing a different character it might have been easy to choose their "main" characteristic and reverse it (Sora's optimism, for instance, or Jacuzzi's crybaby tendencies), but with Riku's character arc there really wasn't a good one to choose. So instead, I looked at what he could learn from his echoes. That's when the idea of building him up as a character solidly in control of his world came to mind--a character who knows how to play the game, who's been playing for years, who knows better than to let anybody get close to him. I figured that as he gained more echoes back, I could build him up more and more--make him think he was this grand player in his previous life, as in control there as he was in this world.

And then break that delusion thoroughly with the knowledge of all the shit he wrecked.

So I developed him as more of a loner than he originally was, gave him a bit higher class standing. It didn't make sense that a kid who'd grown up in one place his whole life wouldn't have any strong ties at all to anyone, so I gave him an upbringing that would prevent him from really putting down roots, and would force him to grow up faster. And with him coming from a game like Kingdom Hearts, which is all about friendship and strength of heart and working together, I loved him growing into a young man who doesn't actually care about other people outside of what use they are to him. \o/ I expect as he develops he's going to start actually forming bonds with his CR, and of course he'll have to question everything about his approach to life so far. He'll be in for a serious case of questioning who he is and who he was, and it's gonna be fun.

In terms of situations/CR I'm looking for, Dante's gonna develop a sort of a three-way rivalry between him, Skyler, and Mac, which is going to be great. Dante's also going to come together with Danny to play a massive prank on Skyler which may or may not end well, and he's actually going to be using Holly as a way to get under Skyler's skin. (Are you sensing a pattern here?) I'm really looking forward to Dante actually forming some of those closer bonds with people, for him to let people into his life beyond meeting in public because he doesn't trust anyone with his personal details.

Also all sorts of snark shenanigans, but given I'm playing Riku, that's pretty much automatic :>

So a question for you: all three of your characters seem to have very different, very distinct personalities. How do you keep them from bleeding into each other, and have you ever noticed it happening in spite of that? What made you decide upon these characters?

I meet TL;DR with TL;DR.

Ohh-ho I can't even say that this is the key so much as plain what I do - I try to hear their voice responding to a tag or idea for a post before and/or as I type it out, and other than that don't fret too much.

I have fretted a bit in the past that they do bleed together a bit on the points that they do have in common - both Anthony and Cinderarity are persnickety worrywarts, Cinderarity and Walter/Bill have a bit of sass on 'em, and Anthony and Walter/Bill are both a bit phobic - but their voices are more than different enough that while I'm writing them, I don't especially think about it at all! This is even taking into account the fact that Anthony strictly-canonically says less than fifty words and four of them are "Charlemagne".

Movin' onto the second part of the question I've wanted to try Anthony for years - the characters in Eternal Darkness are weirdly endearing for how short their roles last (the game is divvied into twelve chapters, getting progressively longer through the game from about ten minutes to two and a half hours - Anthony's chapter is only third - to be honest I think the fact that their personalities are given or hinted at in smallish ways during their chapters make them especially fun to think about playing), and he grabbed me the hardest. What can be gleaned from his character during his part of the game are things I really love in characters, and on top o' that he's my favorite type of zombie - one with whom the horror's not in the idea of being monster-mauled by one but in the idea of being forced to be one. I would've tried him somewhere sooner if it wasn't for the fact that he'd not be very appable from any canon point during which he would be appable as a zombie, also with the fact that I wasn't all that confident in my ability to brush up on the right areas of history to keep the fact that "by the way, he's a kid from the 9th Century" there properly. I was one of the ones who eyed StE for its premise while it was in the works - and I admit I somewhat impulse-apped him when reading up further on the plot caused it to ping me for ED, the mechanics would make apping from it simpler, and reading about the way Echoes worked locked it in that it'd be the perfect first place to play him. I hashed out an app and sent it in the same afternoon as perusing the game info, and alas, here I am!

Rarity was also a bit of a whim. At the time, I-believe-that the idea of apping a sentient animal or human slated to mutate into an animal was only in play with Stella/Romsca and Julien/Yuuya respectively, and I figured the idea of playing either one would be enjoyable - I leaned toward apping a My Little Pony character partly because the canon's plain ol' fun and partly because the Mane Six themselves are pretty "normal", if a bit especially quote-unquote vivid and obviously horses, and thus wherever they started off their Echoes would leave them a fairly normal person who happens to be a horse. I anonymously inquired whether people would think it'd be more fun to see/interact with a human woman turning into a horse or another sentient animal, and the latter won. Rarity's my favorite and I thought her voice would be the most fun to write, hence her!

As for Walter/William, he was the most blatant well-why-not. He's another favorite character of mine who I first played a few years ago off a canonmate - and I've been looking for other games for him ever since off and on. Once StE seemed rather set as my new home game, I thought on apping him in plain because I missed it, but couldn't settle on a reincarnation. I got a vague idea of what his profession could be, and shortly after that, Bookie put up a Plurk mentioning she'd be interested in Phillip having PC family - I went and offered up the character I had on the brain, and that seemed to serendipetously settle it!

What kinds of characters are you most drawn to? Which to you most like writing, yourself; what characters do you enjoy nabbing CR with; and what character types are you most fond of in fiction in general?

Sweet and short, I'm drawn to horrible characters.

Okay no, I tend to be drawn to characters with strong voices and strong personalities. Not always good personalities, mind, but strong ones. (Examples include: Riku, Mushu, James Potter I, Sly Cooper, GLaDOS, Jack Sparrow, Mother Gothel...)

Those are the sorts of characters I enjoy writing most, too! I like writing characters who are ready to get up and go rather than those who sit around waffling. One of my favorite OCs is the type of person to strike up conversation with literally anybody, and he adopts people like nothing else. (I think in the last game I played him in, his "family" was into double digits. He managed to befriend both Sollux and Equius!) Those sorts of characters are really fun, just because there's the potential for such varied CR.

I LOVE ALL CR SERIOUSLY EVERY SINGLE TYPE. I love playing off of characters that make mine look at the world in a different way especially, I love playing off characters that understand mine and can predict every one of their moves. I honestly don't have a certain "type" of character I reach out to; I basically look at a post and go "would [x] respond to this?" and go from there. :> (That's proving a bit frustrating with Dante atm, but hopefully as he grows as a character he'll be more likely to respond to entries from younger characters sob)

Re: character types in fiction, THIS IS ACTUALLY A REALLY HARD QUESTION???? Most people would tell you I tend to go for snark and sass, and for the most part that's true. However in certain cases (Iron Man being the first one that pops into mind), I actually wind up not liking the snarker if they go too far. That being said, if you give me a Red Oni, Blue Oni pairing it's very likely that, barring an awesome Sassmaster on the blue oni side, I'm gonna go red. Ryuko from Kill la Kill, Kamina from Gurren Lagann, Tidus and Jecht of FFX, or Skye of Agents of SHIELD.

(And in an Iron Man/Captain America red/blue matchup, I'm gonna go with Cap.)

aaaaah I don't even know what to ask that doesn't concern Masaaki

If you had to pick up someone other than Riku, who would it be?
darkinferno: (Default)

[personal profile] darkinferno 2014-03-26 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
not masaaki

i miss masaaki

kind of

but still not masaaki because masaaki is not canon alas :(

ACTUALLY THIS IS A REALLY HARD QUESTION???? Because Riku is exactly my character type. If I didn't play him I'd probably be playing Kairi :|a WAIT NO

THAT IS A LIE

IF I WEREN'T PLAYING RIKU I'D BE PLAYING FUCKING TERRA

I'VE ACTUALLY PLAYED AS TERRA

clearly sleeping was a good idea lmfao but yes. If I didn't play Riku, I'd play Terra, and if not Terra then probably Kairi. :>

HOW ABOUT IF YOU WEREN'T PLAYING LAXCHINE LARXENE WHO THEN
twelfthspark: (Default)

[personal profile] twelfthspark 2014-03-26 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
this is true alas :(

I can't possibly imagine how someone could go from playing Riku to playing Terra. ;)

Probably Ashley from Mass Effect! I tend to pick a few muses and stick with them for ages as you might have guessed since I'm still playing Larx nearly ten fucking years later jeez- Larxene and Ash seem to be the most persistent ones. But I don't have a good reincarnate concept for her at the moment, alas.

I'm also the anon who was kicking around the idea of playing the Disreputable Dog, but this is a terrible idea and we will speak no more of it.

What echo are you most looking forward to for Dantebutt?
