The Canon Expies Meme

SAVE THE EARTH is a world tragically devoid of some of our most beloved works of fiction! (good thing too, otherwise reincarnates would be even more fucked up!) Or rather, they exist until someone apps from them, at which point they retroactively don't. But don't feel too bad for this Earth's inhabitants - just as no niche in nature is left open long before life fills it, other, similar fiction has taken the places of the canons we know!

Okay, so since we're all playing modern AUs most of them are familiar with pop culture, right? But since some are off-limits, we've got to get creative. Comment with a little about the expy - or expies, maybe there's more than one - of your character's canon. Or other canons. It can be more or less similar, by the same or different authors, have suspiciously similar titles or anything else! Be as straightforwards or detailed as you wish.

KINGDOM HEARTS

This is a bit of self promotion but if I ever fucking finish Aqua's app, she wrote a series of books called the Starheart Cycle which are suspiciously similar to Kingdom Hearts, since she got the idea from an Echo. They ARE mostly books, though there was one short-lived 2D JRPG based on them in the 90s.

Not STRICTLY following the meme but this seems like a good place to mention that Marisa's mom writes trashy bodice-ripper romance novels under the pen name Paige Dearhart. They normally involve scoundrels with hearts of gold, heroines who grew up in poverty but are secretly nobility, a total inability to communicate basic feelings when doing so would resolve the plot neatly, and extremely PG-13 sex scenes.

As for Touhou Project, it's basically gone, but other games in the bullet hell genre have grown proportionately more popular and convoluted. Esp.ra.de in particular has a fairly extensive cult following.

VARIOUS SEASONS OF KARATE BUGMAN AS DISCUSSED ON PLURK

[personal profile] happybirthdaytoyou 2013-06-13 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Kamen Rider OOO is Karate Bugman UUU (pronounced "ooze") and has kaijin made of slime. And a slime-powered UUU driver.

Kamen Rider Fourze is Karate Bugman Goze, which is "weirdly cheesy and is themed around a five-piece bugman with switchable arm, leg, and head parts that is all about digging underground and solving mysteries of lot ruins and excavations." ("GO" or five + ZEro)

Kamen Rider Kuuga is Karate Bugman CoolGuy.

Kamen Rider W ended up (quite appropriately) with two series based on it. The first one, Karate Bugman Skeleton, about this "sweet detective and his dumb schoolboy assistant." The second, Karate Bugman Triple, was a direct sequel and had "three guys who became one bugman that could become three bugmen."

(these were taken from plurk conversations)

This is the big one. Mister big. The guy that everyone knows with his cape and his odd accent and even has been copied by children's cereal and programs about spelling. He is the one that has defined vampires ever since a little Irish playwright typed out the horrid little book and a buddy decided to change it into a play in which a guy by the name of Bela stepped into the cape and white stage makeup and made horror film history.

But for SAVE THE EARTH, we do not know Dracula. We however know dear old Lord Ruthven who was a lord that made the deal with the Devil in exchange for eternal life and wealth. All the other vampire tropes are still quite intact but Dracula, well Dracula didn't cut the mustard first.

Of course, this is all in case one of the many millions of Draculas from various medias get apped in.

Homebound is an ongoing multimedia comic done in the style of old-school text adventure/point and click games. The plot is a giant messy snarl of time travel and self-referential madness. It had a pretty decent following that really blew up after one chapter introduced the forty-some magical girl squid aliens.

Cosplayers wearing distinctive gummi-worm tentacles have been swarming comic conventions since then.

There's an accompanying in-universe webcomic that's full of deliberate jpeg artifacts and typos. It's called Legrend of the Unreal Shithead.

Homebound occasionally gets confused with a series of flash cartoons from the 00's called Homeschool Winner.

[personal profile] caosgo 2013-06-13 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Transcendental (TSD) is a series of mediocre books by a struggling author about two brothers living off their father's trust fund fighting ghosts and stuff. Generally by pretending to be law enforcement, pulling strings with their dad's old buddies, or breaking and entering. Eventually they're joined by a sexy succubus lady who's supposed to bring them to ruin, but ends up falling for the bad-boy-with-a-heart-of-gold older brother. There are a lot of really terrible sex scenes. Minor characters get killed off frequently. They drive an orange '56 Ford Sunliner.

It's got a small but terrifying cult following. They might be making it into a TV show or something?

Harmony Dolphin is children's show conceived to promote a line of bath toys, though for the work put into it even with that basis, it's not poorly regarded; each of the dolphins in the show is based on a collectably colorful and patterned little floating plastic dolphin that plays a different little melody via a waterproofed voice box at the push of a button; the studio takes the designs and works with them (they managed to turn one of the most mundane-looking toys, Stormalong the navy blue dolphin with a gold stripe along each side and a white belly, into one of the most popular ones by characterizing him as a charismatic salty young sailor), and the animation is "fluid", natch. But what nearly anyone includes it in their guilty pleasures for is the music. There is much emphasis on the music. Every named dolphin has their own leitmotif based on their corresponding toy's little jingle and the show is loaded with musical numbers.

In attempt to reduce their need to consider it a "guilty pleasure", a circle of young adult HD fans have banded together under the "brofin" flag, a play on "dolphin" and "brofist" (and of course "fin"), as in to give someone a brofist or rather bro-fin on their admittance to watching the cartoon about dolphins.

Final Fantasy series

[personal profile] ursoreckless 2013-06-13 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
Swords & Machines is a series of games by InASquare that are about friendship, protecting the environment and really cool graphics. Each game in the series is set on separate planets (save for Seven-b, Ten-b and Twelve-b) but all have similar elements. Magic can be used by collecting core powers - though the names for these core powers varies - technology is viewed as being okay if handled properly, and over the top fighting sequences and side quests that are funner than the main storyline also appear. The most popular main characters of the series varies depending on who you are talking to, but the most recognizable villain by even non-gamers is the tall, voluminous femme fatal Serphatina.

She even has a theme song and there are hints that she may appear in another sequel of Seven as a playable character thanks to InASquare's demo of the new fighting system for their Versus game in the last Gamer conference earlier this year.

or should I say, Zipper Demons. Zippemon for short. A very famous, long-running children's anime, with video games based off of it. There's a card game, too.

Satoko travels the world on a quest to befriend one of every kind of Zippemon! (In english, she's known as Sasha Kollectem). In later seasons she's joined by Haru - a young boy who's run away from home to go on a quest to become the world's very best Zippemon Administrator, against the wishes of his father. His name is April in the dub. Everyone agrees that Accelerated Reign was the best reign of them all because in this universe, people have superior taste.

LEGEND OF ZELDA

[personal profile] stealinghats 2013-06-13 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Fable of Helga is a long-running fantasy game series about a red-garbed hero named Chain who has to save a princess from the exact same evil horseheaded demon in 9000 different games. Sometimes, you have to find the Tri-Forks, and sometimes you have to get the Champion Blade, and the games involve a crapload of puzzles and items to collect.

Most people agree that Piccolo of Space was revolutionary to gaming, though others think it's put on a bit too much of a pedestal (c'mon guys everyone knows Land Waker was the best one).
