A glowing, pink portal appears in the middle of Locke’s business district. And through it come some very... interesting characters.

[ I don't remember agreeing to a haircut. Akira lingers a moment longer before turning and following with long, quick strides. His hands go up to his backpack to make sure it stays in place. In true skeptical fashion: ]

So you think the news made it all up? And the buildings fell over by themselves?

[I don't remember agreeing to a haircut democracy. He looks over his shoulder to check if Akira is following.]

It could have been an earthquake, an explosion. It could have been anything. However, giant snakes are a little farfetched, aren't they? Though perhaps a little more exciting, I suppose.

[Kevin cares not about excitement unless gambling is involved. Real life is way too exciting as it is. Excitement, he knows too well, can kill people and leave orphans behind.]

[ Akira's about two steps behind, watching the back of Kevin's head more than the street as he rattles on while Akira knows better. It could be an elaborate hoax, but it is pretty disturbing and simultaneously interesting either way. He steps a little quicker to catch up and fall in line beside him, muttering. ]

I think we would have felt an earthquake.

AH!— [ Akira has stopped dead in his tracks. The marquee of the local movie theater is right in his line of vision and there's a new movie release. His attention darts back to Kevin. Aside from paints, this is the one other thing Akira can't resist. He's no good with books or reading, but seeing movies always inspires a good painting. He knows better than to ask for theater tickets. ]

Can we pick up a movie?

[ He opens his mouth and anyone can tell he is about to say no. Movies are noisy and shallow, and movie theaters are humid dens of Acari. Besides, it is almost dinner time, Akira has been clearly skipping classes...and what about earthquakes without any indication of earthquakes? No, this is certainly not the most practical proposal, and any responsible parent would seize this opportunity to establish some disciplinary boundaries.

And yet, here is this bright child smiling at him and asking for this very simple thing. He closes his mouth again and attempts to disguise his hesitation by adjusting the knot of his tie.]

...What sort of movie is it?

[ He doesn't seem to pick up on the hesitation because he's busy pulling his bag around and rummaging through it to make sure he has his sketchpad. He's kept walking, although a bit slower, using Kevin's arm as a guide so he doesn't veer off. Akira looks up, completely determined to acclimate him to the world of cinema. He starts muttering in a grumble of disapproval: ]

You need to watch more American movies. You're picking.

Me?

[He sounds rather shocked. It is certainly not his intention to get acclimatized to any movies, American or otherwise. However, the boy's eagerness is almost heartbreaking. A little more nervously now, he glances at the movie titles. Well, maybe something educational and quiet...]

P-perhaps that one?

[There, Independence Day. A little history has never harmed anyone.]

[ A prolonged snort grinds out of Akira as he tries to keep himself from outright laughing. He has no idea what he's just picked isn't educational. No idea. Akira's familiar enough with that movie. He can quote the entire final speech, but it's been awhile. He clears his throat lightly as he mutes his expression of glee as he approaches the Redbox pointing. ]

This one? You sure?.. [ He's not waiting for a second thought. Akira's already poking around the machine and selecting the movie. As he's checking out, and the machine is picking pushing the thin disk from the side, Akira speaks up again, thoughtful and humming in tone. ]

It's a good choice. You can't get more American than this.

[ You sir did just pick an action and humor American movie with aliens and Akira cannot wait to show it to you. ]

[No, he is not sure. In fact, he has never been less sure in his whole...well, life would be an exaggeration, but it has been a while. He watches the child's glee with growing wariness, knowing too well the joke is on him.

With a resigned sigh, he pays for the movie with some of the money Akira gave him a few minutes ago. At least the kid is happy, he tells himself. Besides, how bad can it be?]

...It is not too inaccurate, is it?

[ Honestly! He's just asking for it now. Akira shakes his head somberly. If he was going to fully take advantage of this situation, he'd really put his guardian down. Two years and he's finally stepping up to choose which movie to watch. He should be pleased that it means Akira won't spend all night painting. He's definitely woken up with smudges of prussian blue on his face. ]

It's about as accurate as most American movies.

[ Akira glances at the clear plastic and the disk inside and discreetly flips it over so only the shiny silver surface can be seen. Best not to destroy his hopes of a historically accurate movie with the red and yellow cover of a giant alien ship blowing up a city. He'll never let him near downtown again. ]

[The whole thing is suspicious. Extremely suspicious. Still, watching a movie together with the boy counts as quality time, doesn't it? He has been going through child psychology books, and even asked for professional advice. It is not that he believes there is something truly wrong with Akira, no matter what the teachers say. His child lost his parents and needs love, like any child. It is just that he believes there is something wrong with him.]

...Well then, but you are getting that haircut today.

[ Do all those books help you read this face of concern. Akira reaches up and idly tugs on a piece of his hair, gauging its length. Is it that much longer? When was his last cut? A sense of dread comes over him. Oh yes. He remembers why he's been avoiding it. ]

You cut it crooked last time.

[senseandcecilbility]

[No, they do not. His fellow humans have always been way too puzzling, and he doesn't even know why. However, he has been around Akira long enough to know the meaning of that look. He is always observing. It is what he does best.]

Do not give me that look, young man. I have been practicing!

[Not only hair cutting, but also cooking, cleaning and overall parenting. For two years. It has been an adventure.]

After the movie, though. [He concedes.] ...And lasagna?

[ He'll refrain from mentioning that went into the bathroom with a pair of scissors to try and fix it last time. His attention snaps to the concession, though. It's minor, and the decision to cut his hair is already unrelenting, but it's a relief not to face that as soon as he gets home. He'd rather him fuss over the amount of paint everywhere. ]

Oh~ Dinner and a movie then. It's a family date.

[ Akira looks away. There's no telling the thought process going through his head right now. His poker face is equally as good as yours. ]

[Family date. The two words are paralyzing. Is that what a real family is like? Cecil wouldn't know. He never...]

Yes. [He replies firmly. They are going to watch the bloody movie, and have dinner and Akira is getting his haircut and it is going to be fun.] It is time to go.

[And maybe Akira will smile just a little more often, and even more sincerely. In the end, that is what really matters.]
