A glowing, pink portal appears in the middle of Locke’s business district. And through it come some very... interesting characters.

Walls? Nah. We've got subtler methods for keeping people in or out. Don't always work, of course. C'mon, walk with me.

[His stride is very long, so Julien keeps his pace slow.]

Well... sort of?

[It's not really trapped... so much as that's all there is possibly.]

Uh, [She thinks for a moment.] There's not a lot. I don't remember my life before I was a Haibane.

Sounds trapped to me. Except you're here now.

[He struts wearily across a crosswalk. A car honks. Julien waves his wing, not really noticing.]

C'mon, everyone has a story. Friends you have, what you like to do, what you don't... You were something else before you were Haibane?

[Rakka visibly jumps at the sound of the car honking. Living in a place like she did, she hadn't even seen a car before.]

W-well, there's the other Haibane that live with me in Old home. Reki, Kuu, Kana, Hikari, and Nemu. They're all my friends, and Reki helped me when I hatched from my cocoon.

[His second question makes her nod slowly, her expression dropping.]

Yeah.... I can't remember any of it though. None of the Haibane can.

[He looks back when she startles.]

Easy there. They won't hurt you if you follow the rules. Even if you don't, they won't try to hurt you.

[This is something else to focus on, at least.]

Hmm. I've never heard of any of that. What's a Haibane? Why do you hatch?

I-I've never seen stuff like this before.

[Aside from some horse-drawn carts, as well as Reki's motorscooter and some motorcycles, Rakka never saw a car before. So, just going to hurry along now in case things get hairy.

And oh. That question. She frowns, looking more lost than she currently was.]

I don't know. I wonder that a lot myself. Reki wondered it a lot too, but none of us really know.

It's all right. You'll be fine. See how there's people inside? They're just people, like anywhere.

[He tips his face upwards and smiles, cynical.]

Yeah, it is. You have that problem too?

Haha, sorry! Didn't mean to patronize you.

[Even at less than his best like today, Julien doesn't mind being snapped at.]

Sort of. I was born and raised pretty normally. Things started happening, though, and I don't know why.
