> Cleanup of downtown Locke City still has a ways to go. It looks like that shop you were planning on another trip to this week is closed for the time being. Or the entire block is trashed and you'll be needing an alternate route to work. Or your workplace is trashed, if not some real estate you had in the area, and you'll be needing a helping hand - or are trying to offer one!
> Help, help, I've been robbed - your bag or wallet's just been snatched, or is in the process of being snatched. Catch the snatcher or rough them up - you may or may not be surprised, if you come to blows or a chase, to find on throwing a punch that they're much quicker and/or sturdier than you'd have expected. Maybe someone will dive in to back you up.
> Monster encounter! The above or you were robbed (or, for all you could tell, misplaced something) a while ago, and one of the objects you lost seems to have come back to you, if not the way you recognize it. Ayup, getting backup might be a good idea.

Not a problem. So, why Locke? Most people are trying to move away from it.

Because I needed a place to go. And Gabriel was kind enough to offer me a place to stay.

Well, crazy snakes and superpowered people aside, you could pick a worse place, I guess. Did you see that light in Vegas?

I... no. I was a bit too distracted by the giant snakes, I'm afraid.

[youngestone]

The lights were a few days ago, but the snakes were pretty distracting. At least you weren't here for 'em?

[silversurvivor]

No, actually... I did see them. A little bit. I was sort of trying to avoid them. A terrible thing for a journalist to do, but it didn't feel like a story I was ready to cover.

[youngestone]

Trust me, no one is ready to cover that story.

[He is so speaking from experience here.]

All the crazy shit happening and no one knows why? What's there to even report?

What's there not to? It has all the makings for a great tabloid piece.

[He sounds a little bitter as he explains]

Yeah, which is the problem. Actual people were hurt in this, or made homeless or God knows what else. Tabloids just make it worse, y'know? No one knows anything so they make up stuff and then you have conspiracy theorists harassing everyone in town over giant lizard people.

[Killian pauses and then shakes his head]

Ah, sorry, I've been bugged by people about giant lizards since I got off bedrest and it's starting to grate. Can you tell?

Fortunately, I was never in the tabloid business. Too much self-respect for that. All I ever wanted to do was record history as it happened and be there to account for the world around us as it was shaped. The truth is rarely as pretty as we'd like it to be.

I don't know anything about giant lizards, so I can't bug you about them. Though, I will admit that Gabriel hasn't told me much about this place or his friends.

As far as I know, the only people that're really his friends are my uncle Thorir, Doc Percell, and the jackass environmentalist Teagan whatever. Owns a company or something, I dunno. That's about all I can tell you about them though.

[Since lol not gonna tell her about the Network just yet, nope.]

Otherwise...well, right now everything important about Locke's on the news lately.

I see. You'll have to forgive me if I'm not all the way up-to-date. I spent a very long time in a very remote part of the world, and I'm still trying to catch up.

S'fine! I'm just not the best person to talk about all the news stuff. The crazy shit that no one's covering, maybe, but I'm honestly trying to ignore it. Where were you?

[silversurvivor]

[She goes silent for a while, and finally, softly, answers the question.]

...Afghanistan.

[Her tone makes two things clear: 1) something bad happened there, and 2) that's the most she's going to say about it right now.]

[Right. Not going to ask. Not even going to ask Gabriel. This sounds bad. Change the topic!]

So you're a journalist?

Was. For quite a number of years. I'm not on anyone's books right now.

[He wonders if Afghanistan is the reason she's not one anymore]

So basically you're retiring to Locke with Gabriel. You know that's, like, the farthest from relaxing, yeah?

I'm aware of my cousin's penchant for... interesting things. but he was kind enough to take me in, so I won't complain.

Something like that. My cousin always was vivacious. I think that's why we got along so well as children.
