[Wow he is a lot easier to make feel better than Claire. She'd still be screaming her head off at this point.]

Best make sure! [She gives him another kiss and then call it done, because wow cooties!]

Sorry to hear about your mamma. Hope shes okay! I'm Ariel.

She will be! I think, Gran says she will be anyway.

[He actually kinda blushes at that second kiss--girls he's not related to are weird--but he grins]

Oh that's okay then! Hey you wanna go play somewhere else since you cant do the monkey bars? We could go on the slide!

[She is hoping he is just as adventurous as her so they could do some fun stuff together.]

[He's not really, but most of the other kids think he's a little weird so he jumps at the chance to actually have a friend!]

Or the swings? I'm really good at swinging!

Swinings good! I like to go really high and then jump off! Mom says I'm not allowed to anymore tho. Says I'll hurt myself.

You might an' then you'll bleed an' I'll have to go find your mama an' then we won't get to play anymore.

[He makes a face]

No jumping off? We can still go really high, though.

[ She makes a face, It wasn't as fun if she couldn't jump off, but then she didn't often have someone to swing with. Claire liked to play with dolls more than she liked to do things.]

Ok, high and fast!

As fast as we can go! You're prob'ly gonna go higher cuz you're taller!

[She looked him up and down, thinking as she did so.] But you're smaller so the whatchamacallit isn't gonna hold you down!

[He tilts his head, heading to the swings]

You know the uhm thing hat keeps us from falling off the ground! [She sounds so scientific here.

They're in luck that only some of the swings are in use, so they don't need to wait to start using them.]

[That's it, right?

Killian grabs a swing and starts trying to get himself going. He's a little too short to do it on his own, though]

[Its close to the word she'd heard on the science show, but not quite. Still it's better than nothing so she nods.]

Yah, that stuff. It's sticky. [Ariel gets behind him and gives him a helpful push. She's had to do this for Claire before so she's pretty good at it!]

Thanks! Why isn't it called gum then, if it's sticky?

[And off he goes!]

Cos gum stick to hair and your hair isn't sticky!

Ariel watches him a moment, and then quickly gets onto the swing, backing up a few steps so that she is son her tip toes and then drawing her legs up so the swing gives her a jump start forwards.]

But the gravy-sticky-stuff is sticky! So it should be called gum!

[Ariel starts pumping her legs while thinking about it. Finally, she begins to speak out loud, sounding out her reasoning as she goes.] Oh I guess that makes sense... since gum is elasticky an' we can jump an' swing and leave the ground before going down again.

[child logic is flawless.]

[He's just gonna nod as they swing, grinning. Killian isn't entirely sure if she's right but it sounds right so]

Yeah! You're really smart, Ariel!

My mommy's a science person! She encur- ent-- she wants me to learn!

what's your mommy do besides sleep?

[He looks down, still swinging]

She's real good with people but we don't stay in one place long enough for Mama to get a job.

Oh! neither do we! We travel a lot! It gets lonely sometimes. I got a little sister but she is boring to play with!

[Ariel is getting up high now and having to fight the temptation to launch herself out of the swing.]

[Wait, what? Someone else travels a lot? Killian looks up and smiles at the girl because he's not weird.]

I don't got a sister. I got all my cousins, though! Sometimes they're fun but a lot of times they're loud an' boring and kinda stupid.

I'm not supposed to say mean things like that About my sister. Mom and dad don't like it.

What's it like having a buncha cousins? Cos I only have my sister.

[She knows she has more family and cousins too, but she's never met them before so they exist like some fantastical creature out of sight like a unicorn.]

They're always in my stuff an' being nosy an' loud and my older ones are really kinda mean but my younger ones are okay sometimes! What's it like having a sister?

[So cousins sounded just like a sister.]

A lot like cousins. Shes always getting into my stuff an' gettin' me in trouble n' stuff.

[Ariel couldn't resist anymore and let go of the swing so that she could push herself off and take a flying leap out if the swing.]
