THE DAEMON MEME

a DAEMON is an animal that represents your character's soul in some way; the concept originates from Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy.

Daemons are ALMOST ALWAYS the opposite gender of their person, and while their shape reflects their person's personality, they don't always agree with their person. Someone who seems stern might have a stern daemon... or they may have a boisterous one, showing a hidden side to them.

Children who haven't been through puberty have daemons that shapeshift, but they often have favorite forms.

[Toni is accompanied by her German Shepherd dog daemon, Kikuchiyo. This is not surprising to people who know her, even though they don't know her well.

Kikuchiyo, however, is a little more open to talking informally than his human.

And yes, this would have been the daemon she had in her preincarnation as well. Same name and everything.]

I..... HAVE NO IDEA. I am tempted to say some sort of reptile, but I'm not certain. Shiro is protective, social but emotionally distant, somewhat cruel, an asshole with a heart of gold. Hungry all the time. Ferocious fighter when he actually gets wound up. Maybe an alligator?

[Marisa Kirisame's Daemon, Ame, settled a while ago as a black billed magpie. He shares Marisa's carefree attitude towards rules and social obligations, but differs from his human in that he is fond of elaborate subterfuge and diabolical plans. When they decide what to do, Ame sometimes gets so carried away detailing how to do it that he doesn't notice that she's already done it in the simple, straight forwards way.

None the less, they get along quite well.]

[Fair warning, I will suggest mostly bird dæmons. I like the ones not often picked as spirit animals and the like, ones which are incredibly cool but not obviously so.

Julien's dæmon would be a little blue budgerigar parakeet. Descended from tiny nomadic Australian parrots living in harsh conditions, this dæmon would take more after the birds who have been bred in captivity for 150 years.

Budgies are colorful, entertaining, social, often bonding most strongly to one individual with whom they are very affectionate. They're smarter and more adept than you might think, but still need to be looked after. Clip their wings and they're pretty okay - if flighted they have much more freedom, but they can also hurt themselves terribly or escape. And once escaped they may go feral, but let's face it, most pet budgies who escape die quickly.

"Males are typically cheerful, extroverted, highly flirtatious, peacefully social, and very vocal. Females are typically highly dominant and more socially intolerant." Julien's Wendllian, or Wendi, is more reserved and quieter than he is, except with someone he likes a lot. If she preens another dæmon, it's a big sign of affection. If they're in high spirits and riding in a car at not too fast speeds, she flies outside and keeps abreast.

Julien's preincarnation, Yuuya, has a Channel-Billed Cuckoo named Canaille. Canaille represents all those aspects of Yuuya he tries to keep hidden. A creature not just willing but forced to do something underhanded, red eyes indicating some kind of scorn or resentment, possibly migratory, largely solitary but closely cooperating with mates, often at the margins of flocks but not liked by other birds, hard to find despite having loud calls. Her name is an insulting one referring to dogs or the lower class, but also sounds beautiful - he's commonly called a mongrel and seems to take it cheerfully.

Canaille is a little more openly concerned for people than Yuuya, though she's still generally quiet to his talkative. She is dyed black, because most people who don't know birds will then assume that she is a raven.]

She's about as talkative as he is, maybe a bit less, and would probably seem more imposing if she weren't incredibly adorable. Both of them are sort of embarrassed by this.]

Not really up for RP after the day I've had, but for sure had to say: Lyall's daemon would be a moth :3 Small, light, quick, moves effortlessly and gracefully (shush Stella, he'll get his grace back eventually...), easily overlooked and underestimated, and blends in well. Plus, shades of brown. He's a very brown person, I think, in personality more than physical appearance.

[Most people would probably give a word of warning to anyone planning to approach a boy who has a fox for a dæmon, but those kinds of fears tend to be rather unfounded when it comes to Akito. Although he does often exchange worryingly mischievous looks with Kuniko, the tricks they play are (mostly) harmless in the end.

Probably for the better this way, honestly. Because back when his name was Ahito, Kuniko was a weasel who was only too happy to see their mutual enemies suffer when the pair went behind their backs. Weasels were once a symbol of both stealth and revenge, after all.

At any rate, if you look closely enough, you might just spot them perched up in a tree, but rest assured - they most definitely spotted you first. With Akito's preference for clothes in subdued colors and Kuniko's trademark grey fur, it may be a little difficult to see them in the foliage from a distance.]

She's old enough for it to have settled, so I'm thinking Octavia's daemon is prrrrobably a blue-throated hummingbird for several reasons:

- A spider or scorpion would have been super uninspired. And I'm severely arachnophobic so fuck that noise
- It's smaller and sillier and less impressive than she'd like, and that's hilarious
- It works as a Con Air reference, and every Homestuck knows how important Con Air is. Hullo, humminburr.

More seriously, they are greedy, territorial and always zipping from one thing to the next! And in Aztec culture it was believed that dead warriors were reincarnated as hummingbirds which is all kinds of relevant.

Ponderation. Felix, I'm pretty sure, would have a rhinoceros, but that draws on aspects of him that Fred didn't/hasn't Echoed back. I'm honestly thinking Fred'd have some kind of dog, maybe a terrier breed. But if any of you have input, I'd be glad to hear it!

I'm not sure. Instinct tells me to go with some kind of aggressively affectionate house dog, but I'd be willing to go more creative if someone has an idea. Maybe a badger?

Although really she's on the tail end of puberty so maybe I can just say he has a preference for cuddly territorial predators...

Elian's Daemon is a wizened robin, one more likely to be seen on his shoulder than flying at this time in their lives. Her name is Kazel, and she's quite a sleepy one; burrowing in to his scarves, his coat, anything where she can rest and relax. When she is awake, she doesn't talk much; merely observing and watching the world around her, occasionally quietly murmuring words in to Elian's ear.

The robin is a symbol of, quote - "understanding the power of song, happiness, guide in the wisdom of change, growth, renewal." Elian's had a rebirth of sorts multiple times in his life, and it's a good tie to that- in terms of his younger self, always happy and optimistic, and then learning from the changes that affected him.

His preincarnation? WHO THE FK KNOWS. Considering Angels of HDM don't have Daemons...that may be the case with Vector Prime. ~~If he did have one, it would have been Safeguard. I MEAN-~~

I actually have all kinds of headcanons relating to a possible Attack on Titan Daemon AU because I am a huge nerd, the main one being that titan shifters' daemons never settle into one form.

As such, I don't really have a specific idea for Eren's daemon, but I see her having a preference for small and quick predators.

Alan's daemon, on the other hand, is a peahen. She's generally more calm and subdued than her human, but sometimes gets angry and does the ridiculous fluffy hopping and hissing that angry peafowl do.

Chris' Daemon is a plain old Eurasian Magpie, pica pica. Flight is always going to be a huge part of Chris' thing, and while she'd like to consider herself something exotic and extraordinary, she's really just common but very very clever... and often too smart for her own damn good. Because of the deal with her having Starscream's soul, her Daemon is one of the very few that's the same gender as she is.

Honestly, Starscream's is the same, his is just the Cybertronian version rather than the Earth version. Y'know.

I actually don't have a clue about what Shou/Sho would have for a daemon so I would like suggestions. This life, he is a flashy but nice guy with a bit of temper and a mischievous streak and a lot more cleverer than he thinks he is. And a total goof. In his last life, well, a lot more aggressive, less prone to fits of pure mischief and very attached to those few people that he trusts in his life, so much so he goes on a suicidal charge against a whole armed gang when his family dies off.

I . . . really don't have much of an idea here, so I am way open to suggestions. Toushirou is a serious, industrious sort. He's prone to huffiness when things aren't going the way he wants them to. He gets really protective of those he's close to, and while he comes off as emotionally distant a lot of the time, he's more relaxed with family. When faced with conflict, he typically confronts it head-on whether it's a good idea or not.

This one is fairly easy for me ^^ In his canon, at one point, Fai is given control of a Kudan, which is a sort of... god that bonds with each person in that world. IT'S REALLY WEIRD, but the point is, they sort of represent what kind of person you are the way a daemon does. Add that to all the 184738947582 times Fai is shown with bird/phoenix imagery, and the fact that the TRC group are obviously supposed to represent four elements (Fai = Wind, Kurogane = Ice/Water, Syaoran = Fire, OTHER Syaoran = Lightning, Sakura = Earth)... well, there it goes. Also he would probably jive well with the witches.

But since his Kudan is FREAKING HOUSE SIZED and phoenixes aren't an actual thing, I decided on a Nicobar Pigeon. This, this, this and this should tell you all about why. They're just that fabulous. Also, pigeons are clever and social birds, and I bet she'd be a lot more sensible than her human B|

...fuck it, I'm gonna ~~seize on a thinly veiled excuse to babble about/post images of bald eagles~~ talk about why a Bald Eagle would work for Aaron Strider.

Okay, okay, these birds have a lot of symbolism attached to them. They're seen as so regal and noble and cool-looking, AMERRIKUH, etc. But if you spend any time studying them, well, they scavenge and steal quite happily. Unlike Golden Eagles they're not all that bold and don't often tackle dangerous prey (like wolves. Goldens are hardcore.) No, baldies hunt well but are are great foragers and not very picky, though they'll defend what they've got regardless of how they got it.

And this pays off, because baldies are hideously successful. At least half of the new fledgelings survive to their first year and after that they tend to make it. Which is not guaranteed for any bird! But they can usually manage to find food regardless of what's going on, and not too many things dare to mess with them. Anything will go after the nests, but they defend those nests. Even against bears.

They're not all that social, but they don't often fight among themselves and can be seen in groups sometimes. Like a lot of birds they pair bond and seem to enjoy the company of their mates, which may be for life. Pairs have a loyalty to their first nesting site but can move elsewhere if they must. Sometimes they cooperate with their mates to hunt. As parents they vary even from year to year; sometimes they're distant and end up just dropping prey and flying off as soon as possible, sometimes they fuss and make sure every baby gets enough to eat.

Many eagles practice siblicide, with the oldest hatchling killing the younger ones. While some baldies do this, it's pretty common for more than one bird to fledge per brood and the sibs can be surprisingly supportive of each other. They play. There's a case where one seemed troubled by its sib not flying yet and curtailed its own flying to encourage the weaker sib and train it. It seems like they can have a sense of empathy.

Plus, you know, young ones start off more clumsy and timid but grow into their power and confidence. Adults hunt more, young ones scavenge more. And the whole eagle eyes/vision thing.

afaik those are all different birds. Also, their feathers can get kinda unkempt and sometimes they don't look all that majestic.

So yeah, to sum up: initially there might be cool/noble associations (doctor at a clinic that'll take anyone!), and then a lot of aspects people don't think highly of (LSR's location, general sketchiness) and a willingness to do less than scrupulous things... but then again, this is stuff that has to be done to keep doing this, and there's kindness there even at cost to self, sometimes.

Also I like to imagine what if getting a number meant getting a dæmon too and how dismayed Aaron would be to find that his was a bald eagle, since they're so often used as patriotic symbols and he's so disillusioned on that front.

Right so the loyalty and devotion and reliability point him squarely at DOG, but he's got a bit of a loner streak to him, as well as aggressive overreactions to any even mildly threatening stimuli and some totally non threatening stimuli (ex: pots). So basically he's a dog with attitude problems. He is doge.

Not kiddng, he's a Shiba Inu. They're melodramatic, intelligent dogs that are incredibly loyal provided you can handle training them. They're prone to aggressive outbursts if you can't however, and will probably never be 100% okay with strangers. Also idk I like the idea of Link being a Japanese breed and whatnot. Oh and Shiba's are this nice creamy gold color, which ties into his golden wolf form in TP.

More on the personality side as opposed to the aesthetics, Shibas are often described as very cat-like dogs, tending having independent and almost aloof personalities. This fits in well with Link's solo mentality and his tendency to isolate himself. I could keep going drawing more parallels but I think you probably get the point. Doggy with some not quite so doggy features. He probably settles during the final stretch of being an Adult, and then remains fixed when he returns to being a child, which is pretty surreal and weird for everyone involved.

Of course Luke himself hasn't settled yet, and given what he might or might not go through in STE he could settle as any number of related things. At present his deamon tends to be medium to large furry animals, with occasional birds. They give him something to hold onto or hide behind when he's feeling nervous and it's a bit of a way to compensate for his smaller size and general timidity.
