The Train to STE Meme (SPOILERS for canon deaths)

You know those Train to the Afterlife memes? In STE the canon versions of all our characters are dead. What if there was a train bearing their spirits on to reincarnation here?

This is a meme where canon versions of the characters can interact. They all know they're dead. They may or may not remember just how they died, or how they got to be on this particular train. Doesn't matter if they'll be born decades apart - that just means some people disembark a little earlier than others. Go over brochures about what your new incarnation will be like, spontaneously turn or be human, try the snack cart, fail to convince the friendly but very busy conductor to give you a transfer, or simply chat.

You just can't stop the train, or leave it. Not yet.

[ Aradia Megido had said she was done with dying, but, well - everything and everyone died eventually. Even if she can't quite remember how this came about, she's perfectly fine with the results, though this method of resurrection seems a bit haphazard to her.

She's studying her brochure with intense interest, trying to decide what she thinks of the girl she's going to be.

Well, it doesn't sound that bad, anyway. Alien, in a human way, but not bad. ]

This isn't how resurrection is meant to work, though.

[He's dozing in one of the train cars... or is he? It's really hard to tell if he's just faking it or not. Can dead people even sleep? Ah, who cares. He's been here a while. The brochure he got is folded and smushed into one of his pockets, he's been over and over it a bunch of times. Not much else to do but wait.]

[It was a good life, all things considered. Friends, adventures, plenty of good memories. The lovers' only real problem was their strange inability to remember... exactly how they died. All they can really recall was a man placing his hand on their heads.

Then... emptiness.

Still! No use crying over spilled milk! They race around the train, more excited than ever! A whole new road will open soon enough, so they might as well meet some fellow passengers, steal from the snack cart, and enjoy the ride!

But especially steal from the snack cart. Because holy crap, what an achievement that would be. They watch it from a distance, determined looks on their faces. Shit going down son.

[Hope's accepted that he's died. He really has, because honestly, death's been a long time coming. He's how old? Over a thousand. And he's honestly probably the only l'Cie out of the original six who hasn't had a brush with death, so that's also something. Of course he doesn't remember how he died, but it's probably for the best, because knowing his crazy life, it must have been traumatic, and he'd rather not have that kind of baggage going onto his new life.

He just wishes he'd have been spared the whole family issues this time around because really. Looking over the files he'd found on his seat, he's apparently going to be an even bigger brat than before, and that's kind of disturbing.]

A brother I can be comfortable with, but more family problems? That will always haunt me, wont it? [He sighs, and it's a very adult sigh.]

[Well. Nobody lives forever, and Kotetsu's had a good life. He's loved and been loved, gotten to live his dreams and watch his baby girl grow up to have a fulfilling, happy life of her own. And Barnaby was with him, to the very end. So he's content, passing on. Perhaps he'll even get to see Tomoe on the train.

The brochure is a little bittersweet; some of it's painful to read, but there are things he's glad for, as well. Barnaby will be there. He will make good friends who'll watch his back. He'll have a daughter again, and he won't make the same mistakes he made with Kaede.

...And he has to admit, it's nice being young again. Well--sort of, but thirty-seven isn't too bad. In fact, he may or may not be seeing if he remembers how to do a couple things. Like a handstand. Or a backflip.]

[ Death wasn't really a huge surprise. Actually, after surviving the fight with the Scouting Legion last time, it's no surprise Reiner ended up dead.

In the end he couldn't protect Bertholdt... Did they even make it back home? It's a little foggy. It's..... weird, reading the brochure he's given. Man, seeing that this guy is gonna get everything he wanted-- it's almost painful. Friends and family and even a relationship with Bertholdt...

[Reimu, for her part, seems rather at peace, considering. This wasn't quite what she was expecting the path to reincarnation to be like, but it doesn't matter. She was one of the few of her family who held the title Hakurei Shrine Maiden to die peacefully of old age, rather than violently at the hands of a youkai, which she did admit was probably more due to the spell card system than anything. Because of that, she'd had quite a bit of time to grow up and settle down from the grumpy violent girl she'd been in her youth. Still, right that moment, she looked exactly as she had at 15, at the height of her adventures, as she sat quietly and read her brochure.

She didn't mind seeing that the life she was going to was, for the most part, more normal than the one she'd lived previously. She was also happy to see that she'd get to see some of her old friends again. Even if it did look like that normalcy wouldn't last, she wasn't that bothered by that either. Hopefully the other her would still get to live as fulfilling a life as she ultimately had at least.]

She wasn't sure what to think of all this. She'd... died. That was itself something weird to consider. She'd only been in her forties, which she took offense at. She'd been with the Prime Minister not long ago... had something happened? Was there an attack? Was Mana okay? Alice, Makoto, Aguri, Regina...? Not knowing was going to kill her... ahaha, probably a bad turn of phrase. But in any event, it was starting to look like the world would have to deal with being down a Precure. Raquel was... markedly absent, for the moment.

The brochure at her side was another thing to wonder about. If she was going to be reincarnated, she didn't object too much to this particular "other self"; a little withdrawn, in need of a shot of self-esteem... maybe she could inspire it in this girl, if she ever found a way to communicate her memories forward. Her trust in the world, in her important people... those were things she wanted, more than anything else, to send on to this new self. Knowledge was nice, but without anyone to share it with, it was meaningless.

Winter Adamas. Rikka could only hope that the girl she would become... would eventually be a worthy successor to her soul.

That came later, though. For now, she wanted to mingle a little, with these other people who had met untimely ends, and maybe get a cup of tea. Even if it isn't Alice's, it calms her down, and that's something she suspects she'll be needing soon.

[Replies may come from [personal profile] diamondlight in addition to Winter's journal.]

[Sandrath stirs from his unconscious state, his brown eyes spring open and observes his surroundings. It didn't take him long to notice that he was on a train, an old device used for transportation. How did he get here? He couldn't remember and that was concerning. Was he dosed with 'demon blood' and moved against his will? Did Enos put him out of his misery or take him to safety?

He quickly raises from his seat and flashes his black eyes to get a sense of what was going on, but all he receives is muddled information about the beings around him. Just great. Someone or something tampered with his abilities and that just made him more angry. A curse escapes his lips as he reaches in to his pants' pocket to retrieve his wallet, checking a hidden compartment for coins made of several materials. Except, it was empty. That wasn't right either.

The fallen arch-angel knew that there was no tunnel to oblivion or above or below. He knew he wasn't accepted in above and disliked by the beings of below. Was Arthur's words about being able to bribe the shepherds of the dead wrong? Did the grim reapers rob him of the coins he collected?

He was going to find out what was going on here and he wasn't going to be his usual 'pleasant' self to the strangers he encounters.]

[Of everyone that does get up and search the train for someone they recognize, there's someone that stays where they are and simply waits.

Rakka is one of those people. She doesn't see any of her friends anywhere, so she might as well wait for one to show up, right?

Yuri Tsukikage had expected other things in the afterlife. Other people. There was a part of her throughout the course of her life that had longed for that. Those very important, beloved people that had been ripped from her in such violent ways... or even that one who she never would have expected to be one of those people. Not up until moments after Yuri took that lost soul's life.

It had not been a terrible life, after that. If anything, those few years were the greatest moments of heartache she would experience. As it was, the exact cause of why she was there remained fuzzy. Maybe it would come back to her before she arrived at her destination.

Maybe not.

Either way, she recalled that it was... strangely peaceful. Somehow, she was okay with that.

Still, she had hoped to see those souls. After all that time, all these years, she'd prayed they would be waiting for her. And maybe they still were, somewhere.

She observed the details of the brochure, craning her head to one side in curiosity. It brought a small smile to her face, and she quietly folded it back up as she leaned her head back. Could a spirit cry? Either way, her eyes felt a little watery.

Lily Tsukuyomi wasn't going to get off completely without hardships. Yuri saw that. But... it could be a good life. Maybe she would need a little push, here and there. A little more confidence in her own heart. A little more this, or that. Maybe not worry so much, though she could see good reason to do so.

But it could be a very good life.

And perhaps some of those souls were waiting for her after all.

[ In the end, it'd been bright. Banagher hadn't really known what to expect, if anything at all. Part of him was still clinging to that endless hope that walked the line between impossible and unconquerable, the hope that he could do it. Save humanity from itself, and the war that had ravaged it for a hundred years. It was a burden unlike anything else, that had thrown him into the vastness of space, shown him how cruel the stars could be, and placed the entirety of the earth right in his palms. How it came to him may have been unfair, and irresponsible, but he'd chosen it himself.

And, in the end, he believed he could change everything, because he wasn't alone.

What he didn't believe, or even think about, was the price it came at. He had no way to quantify the value of lives, and when it came time, there was one answer waiting for him. One life for the sake of billions.

The machine had taken him as payment, to show the world what possibility had meant. Turning synapse to circuitry, consciousness to output. Willpower into light. It was then, when he could simultaneously feel nothing and a little bit of everything, that Banagher thought he heard someone trying to call him back — but by then, it was too late.

So sitting in the quietest car of the train he can find, he wonders if it'd finally been enough. If lying to Audrey when he asked her to wait for him was worth it, if stepping foot into the Unicorn changed fate itself. He wasn't a soldier, though Bright Noa would most likely have attempted to make him recognized... KIA, maybe. Others, Spacenoids, may have called him a martyr, a boy sacrificed at the age of sixteen. To others still, he may have just gone to where they couldn't follow.

There's not much to see now but that boy of sixteen, looking out the window to where he was headed. He hasn't touched his brochure, even though he's curious.

Funny. Staring into space — that's what started everything back then, too.

[Mordin Solus is excited.

Never mind that he gets to keep going. Never mind that he gets a fascinating new perspective on life. Even the fact that he'll regain his old memories back isn't the best thing.

The best thing is that those who believed in the salarian Wheel of Life (or human Hinduism) were right, and that fascinates him. If a religion managed to get death right, what else might they have known?

Mordin mutters to himself, excitedly hypothesizing about various religions he's familiar with. He's the most animated he's been in months.

[Enter had already gone over the brochures, but a second look never hurt anyone.

Starting as human... that fascinated him. He cared little for the life Cain Hashimoto would lead. But a true comprehension of humans, able to work from there...

Perhaps Red Buster had been right. He needed this other perspective. He had underestimated humanity, and he had paid dearly for it. What was done was done, however, and he had accepted it. C'est la vie, after all.

Yes, he didn't care about the life Cain Hashimoto might have. But Cain Hashimoto would be a better human than Enter ever could have been. It was a second chance, regardless of how he chose to use it. But that was just the question - how.

He took a few things from the snack cart, leaning back in his seat.

[ Well that took her long enough.

It's strange, being in such a young body again, but she supposes she can't complain - it brings back a rush of memories, of when she first met Hikaru and Fuu, Clef and Presea and many of the most important people in her life. All the struggles, suffering, and sorrow; the joy, and accomplishments too. The most important time of Umi's eventually very long life, finally ended, and she sits back, peaceful, sipping on a cup of tea out of habit more than need.

No one could know what death was like, and while the train and the idea of reincarnation is a strange thing, especially when this Marina looks to be dealing with her problems by being a bigger brat than Umi is quite sure she ever was (she's sure of it, at least), it's acceptable. She can live with...

Well, no, she's dead, and that's a strange thought too, but it happens, and now that she thinks about it...

...she should start looking for people. Umi sits up, looking up and down the aisle. ]

Ravindra thought he'd accepted the quiet eventuality of his own death. But that was...not what he'd expected. He's been here what feels like hours but he's still shaken. The brochure lies on the seat beside him, not even opened yet.

He thought it would be different. Not like that. Not murdered--but of course Alm wouldn't call it murder. He'd fought back. That made it okay. Fuck Alm. Alm wasn't even here. And neither were any of the other gods, so maybe everything was a load of bullshit from the start.

His life is full of regrets, looking back. There's so much he should have done differently. Most importantly, he thinks, he should have died faster. That way he wouldn't have to remember the look on Alex's face as he watched Ravi die in his arms.

He's sitting in a secluded corner of the train, hunched over with his face in his hands, arms propped on his legs. He's middle-aged. Clean shaven, with his hair woven into a thick braid that falls halfway down his back, but perhaps the most notable thing about his appearance is the bloody wound through his chest that exits just below his shoulder blade. Cause of death: pinned on a sword to keep him from healing himself. Just his fucking luck, right?

[ Really, it was a certainty that Historia had always been prepared for. Death, dying... those things had hounded her steps since she'd been brought into the world that seemed to want to reject her with every fiber of its being. Historia Reiss had evaded death in so many ways, and Christa Renz had done nothing but hurtle herself at it with everything that she had. Selfishly, and foolishly. She saw that now, ironically, after she'd finally been graced with a reason to live. One that she maybe didn't deserve, but one that she took and never looked back.

One single reason to live, and simultaneously, one worth dying for.

That's why there's a petite girl of fifteen aboard the train, making pleasantries with most people she passes while navigating the cars. Dying without regrets had to pave the way for this person she'd become — who had the chance to make everything she'd wanted to love about her old life a reality. A family, the animals...

Would she be missing something, however?

[John didn't really necessarily have any clue how he died - hell, for all intents and purposes, for the first hour - or maybe two, there was no way to tell how much time passed - he hadn't been really convinced that he had died. He certainly would have remembered if he had done something that God Tier wouldn't have covered, right?

He looked at the pamphlet some time after that, but... no Dave, no Rose, no Jade, no anyone it seemed from his past life. At least as far as it could be reasoned thus far. The feeling of lonliness - the same as he felt when he and Jade were escaping the Scratch... it gnawed at him. He had endured three years of cabin fever, but in a train in which time had no meaning, it seemed to take considerably less time until he was wandering the cabins. He certainly stood out with his blue windsock pajamas, but maybe he could find someone else to talk to before he went absolutely bonkers.

Dark Precure was, perhaps, one of the few people on this train whose death had not followed long after the adventures for which they were known. In fact, she came from the very end of them, at the end of her story... a story about a doll, made under glass, who fought to be something she could never be.

She stared at the brochure she'd been given. What she read would have caused her to rampage if she wasn't aware of the utter futility of it all. Who was this young fool? She was undeserving of her power, her grace. And what's more, she was more or less her hated enemy's sister... a fact undeserving of what Dark Precure was truly entitled to.

And yet... perhaps most aggravating of all... despite her loneliness, her awkwardness, and so much else, she had something Dark Precure never had...

She was happy.

In fact, it seemed as though her power would only grant the girl misery. Was that her fate? Was that her lot in life? To be a curse upon others?

It made her sick inside. But outwardly, Dark Precure sat in her seat without making a sound, glaring at the brochure with a wide-eyed, unreadable expression.

[Being dead doesn't bother Barnaby in the slightest. He'd made his peace with death a long time ago. He had to, with day job that involved constantly risking his life. Heroes aren't immortal, after all, no matter how much HeroTV tries to make them seem that way. Not that it really applied to him right now - he hasn't been a Hero for a while now - but it was something that he'd accepted when he'd started, way back when.

No, being dead doesn't bother him. Suddenly being young again is a bit unsettling, but it doesn't really bother him either. The contents of the brochure, on the other hand, upset him greatly.

He hasn't read it all the way through yet, but as far as he's concerned he's read enough. This isn't what he'd expected for the afterlife - what he wanted. He doesn't want to be shuffled off for some other life. Not right away, not like this. He wanted a reunion, a chance to see everyone again, see Kotetsu and Aunt Samantha and his parents.

Just once. He just wanted to see them once.

Instead he's on a train to a new life, alone, sitting somewhere out of the way and trying not to cry.]
