The Train to STE Meme (SPOILERS for canon deaths)


You know those Train to the Afterlife memes? In STE the canon versions of all our characters are dead. What if there was a train bearing their spirits on to reincarnation here?

This is a meme where canon versions of the characters can interact. They all know they're dead. They may or may not remember just how they died, or how they got to be on this particular train. Doesn't matter if they'll be born decades apart - that just means some people disembark a little earlier than others. Go over brochures about what your new incarnation will be like, spontaneously turn or be human, try the snack cart, fail to convince the friendly but very busy conductor to give you a transfer, or simply chat.

You just can't stop the train, or leave it. Not yet.

[You know those annoying people who run up and down the train searching for others as soon as they get on the train? Thorin most definitely is one of them. His nephews *have* to be on the same train, it would be only to expect, so...

Except to be approached by a very majestic short person who obviously died in a battle and walks around like he owns the place.]

[Kili, like Thorin, is still covered in injuries from the battle for Erebor. Unlike Thorin, though, he's not able to get up and look for him. The Morgul wound in his leg isn't too keen letting him do that.

Not that he wanted to, really. He was so hoping Thorin had survived, after all of it.

Still, when he hears Thorin's voice, he perks up from the bench he's laid himself out on, looking around for his uncle]

[On a bench somewhere off in a corner is one very injured looking Dwarf. He's also very confused--this isn't the Halls of Mandos, or at least they don't like any halls he'd ever imagined. Then again, why would the halls of the dead look anything like Middle-earth?

He's pretty sure they're not supposed to be moving, though.

Kili's unable to stand right now so he's just lying there, watching all the strange (yet interesting) people walk by him.]

[ Garrus has mostly been staying quiet up until this point when something (or someone) catches his eye. Now that's... a very oddly-proportioned human. ]

Hey. Do you need some help? If my omni-tool still works here, I might be able to get you a bit of medi-gel.

[ He doesn't even assume that this human wouldn't know what that was, or that he might've never seen a turian before. Or that logic has any bearing here. ]

"Human...? It hardly seems necessary."

Yuuya looks from the window to his naked wingtips - no, fingers - and back. His reflection in the glass hasn't changed. Why on Earth he's going to have blue hair is a mystery. His brochure doesn't go into that kind of detail. It also doesn't explain how somebirdie can be up in their twenties and still aimless.

...There are things he desperately doesn't want to forget. But they won't mean the same thing to him once he's grown up with a different life, not at all. He sighs. "This is what one gets for volunteering." Even being shot didn't quell his desire to be a hero.

[ There's only so long that you can keep dodging bullets before eventually one of them ends up getting you (though in this case, that "bullet" might've been just a little metaphorical... it's a little ambiguous). But, Garrus likes to think that he's lived a pretty good life. A little rough around the edges at times, sure... but overall... it's been a good ride.

It was just too bad that it looks like he won't be able to keep a promise to a certain someone.

At the moment, however, he's not dwelling too much on that. Instead, he's eyeing one of the snack trays. ]

So... those snacks. Do you think they have any that are dextro-based?

[Not knowing if humans even make chocolate-covered coffee beans, Yuuya has strutted over to get some to peck up while he has a chance.]

[The Disciple, or Magdalene de Leon as she would be known in her next life is wandering slowly through the train as if in a dream. Her body has yet to change to human, but she at least has gone back to a younger age. Back to a healthier looking body instead of the weak, rattle thin thing she had become over the sweeps of isolation.

While she may be corporeal she almost seems like a ghost in the way she just drifts around people with a distance and utterly lost expression on her face, hand barely holding onto the brochure that had been stuffed into it.

Seven-seven years away from any sort of contact. Seven-seven years of a slowly degenerating mind and body. Her health was back but Di scarcely knew what to do with it and was certain this was all some conjuration of her sick mind. What else could it be? Here she was in some strange transportation device, surrounded by creatures she had never even heard of.

Dead. She was dead they had said. It wasn't a particularly upsetting fact--not at all, if this was all real. Just rather surreal. Yet it was the one thing that kept her feet moving. Despite her confusion and slow understanding of her situation and surroundings, there was a shred of hope. A shred of hope that she would see family long lost.]

It's the aimlessness that's caught Vector's attention; normally it would pass him by, but the almost-forlorn aspects have prickled what bits of curiosity lie within the ancient mech.

L looks dead, but that's been true for a long time. His latest case, after all, has worn and withered him to the point where he's gaunt and haggard, an accurate and dismal reflection of his recent state of mind.

Death had almost been a relief, after what the Yagami boy had put him through. It wasn't enough to slip through the detective's grasp; Light had needed to demolish his credibility and make him look unreasonable and crazy to his own task force. His legacy was of one who had blazed brilliantly, but cracked at the very end when it mattered most.

He hugs his knees, facing away from his ghoulish reflection in the window, staring rigidly at the floor of the train. Though he has seen the answer to his enduring question in the eyes of his killer, and can therefore depart the world of the living knowing that at least he wasn't wrong, he isn't sure the destination will be worth the effort. What is left of his spirit, after all, to reincarnate?

[Winry is content. She lived a long life, and despite it's incredibly turbulent beginnings a very happy one as well. She became renowned for her automail that advanced to the point of allowing people to feel with it. She got married to the man she loved and had beautiful children with him who she got to see grow up and become incredible people. She'd been surrounded by people she cared about--Alphonse, Garfiel, Mei, Ling, and Ran Fan.

No, she is not sad about being dead. Her life had been a fulfilling one.

It was a bit strange to know that she would be brought into another one but a part of her was excited about that, particularly at the prospect of having a sibling. Part of her wanted to seek out this 'Owain' person and she would do that in time--for now she was just resting in a compartment and enjoying the snacks that had been brought to her. Being able to eat all you wanted without worrying about how it would effect your body was very nice indeed.

A knock at the door to the compartment she was occupying, however, drew her attention and she stood up to open it and greet whoever had knocked.]

[The door opens to a man.

His age was hard to tell for sure. Anywhere from 40 up. The shots of gray in his otherwise blond mess suggested age, his smile and bright eyes suggested youth, after all. Other then his uncertain age physically, his age timeline wise could be hard to pinpoint- considering he was decked in leather armor and fur trim and yellow silks. Oh and a sword on his hip]

He saw her, and grinned]

...are... you Winry, then?

Starscream's spark was immortal; indestructible and well capable of lasting outside his physical remains. Even the Chaos Entity, Unicron, hadn't been able to destroy him, and as far as he knew, the only thing which could hurt him were pure blades of crystaline energon.

How had he ended up here...? He had no idea. The last thing he remembered was being blown clear out of Waspinator's body and into deep space, spinning wildly into the abyss.

He glowers in the corner. He's been sized down to fit into the train, so he's about human-sized (heck, he's actually kind of short, at only around five feet three inches) but he's still very much a machine. His arms are folded across his chest and he's glaring at everyone.

Hi, Starscream. There's another robot discreetly glancing over the top of his papers at you from time to time, and arching an optic ridge. He doesn't say anything, though, apparently content with the silence for now.

Dead. Him! Dead! And on a train? This wasn't right. This wasn't how it was supposed to work. And where the hell was Ichigo?! If he was dead, that bastard landlord moron should be too! ... Right? Was it possible for a Zanpakutou to be killed while its wielder still lives?

He flips through the brochure, which laid out the new life he was destined for like the plot of a book. And he gets more and more enraged the further along he gets. Albino? Baker? Aliens? Who wrote this pulp fiction shitty sci-fi garbage?!

"This. Is. BULL-SHIIIIIIIITTTT!!"

He tears the brochure to shreds and throws it around the train like confetti before settling into his chair, arms folded, to sulk.

"I want a goddamn refund."

Starscream makes a whirring noise that's probably something like a sigh.

"If I discover the fool responsible for this, I'm going to rip out his gears and feed them to the nearest Sharkticon."

Death and reincarnation aren't exactly new to Vector Prime. He's had his share of both, probably more than most. What is new is the destination; it's the first time he's gone anywhere but back to the Allspark to set things up once again.

Outsourcing, he thinks it's called.

But the currently-not-so-giant robot seems utterly at ease, reading through a paper with the air of someone on a familiar trip.

You don't seem that bothered about our circumstances.

[His appearance is foreign enough, but the relaxed way with which he's taking this is what piqued Kal's interest.

Okay, maybe it was a little of both.]

Almost all the demon kings before Satan died in battle, and despite his unconventional life, Satan (or was is Sadao? He honestly wasn't sure which he was at this point.) had been no exception. Wrapped in the tattered remains of his cloak, bleeding still from his wounds, the demon strode onto the train. So this was death? It wasn't so bad. He almost had to laugh.

"So this is it? A temporary setback at worst! I WILL rise again!"

He chose a seat and sat down in it as if it were a mighty throne from which he was going to deliver judgement on the souls of the damned.

A young blonde girl slept on the train. She looked in the prime of health, and it wasn't entirely clear why she was even dead. It wasn't until someone sat next to her or otherwise woke her up and saw her eyes that the could feel the huge gulf of years within her. Despite her appearance, this was no child. Just how many centuries she had lived was anyone's guess.

She yawned deeply after being woken up, sat up politely and looked around.

"Oh."

"Yes, oh." The one who sat down next to her was Reimu. She was far more patient in waiting for the witch to wake up than she would've been in her youth, though right now she looked just as young as Marisa looked. Though just like Marisa one could see from her eyes that she was actually much older, if not quite as old. She'd been at least 80 when she'd died after all.

"It's been a long time, hasn't it? At least for you." Another indication that this is the much older Reimu who'd died peacefully of old age the last time the two old friends saw each other rather than a much younger one was the small smile she gave her.

[It's not something that shinigami typically fear, and he never had. It's what happens. It's a cycle, even for many shinigami themselves. Though for them it takes longer.

[He'd be angry, he'd wonder at this process being the wrong one, but it's a waste. Why bother? It's not his own death that disturbs him, honestly. There are other people to worry about, that he's not sure will be along with him in the new life. That, and being separated from his zanpakutou. Again.

[But let it not be said that he keeps himself ill-informed, even if the knowledge will be lost later. Besides, what else is there to do but read the information? His eyebrow lifts at some of it. Honestly. Does he have to be such a brat? This kid better make sure he gets his act together; some of this crap is embarrassing.]

Are those brochures about where we're going? [Ryoji's peering over to look at the boy-- who he's pretty sure isn't as young as he looks, thanks to power senses being on now-- regarding the papers in his hand. He's been too excited about the prospect to even thinking about what they're getting into.]

This is hardly Bakura's first time on a train. Or even his first time on this train, even if his previous trip had been cut short.

Still, he's watching out the window in fascination, peering at everything going by, trying to identify it.


...it's only after reading up on the life he's heading to that he starts to show any signs of distress. That-- that couldn't be right...!

And lurking in the back of his mind, just out of his awareness comes an similar reaction, though one of more disgust than anything else. Bad enough he had lost, bad enough he was truly dead and gone from the world where his revenge hadn't been had... to be stuck with his idiot host again...! And not even his own being! The miserable gods had a sick sense of humor....

[Sitting around silently is only good if you have work to do. And yet here he is, with the business regarding souls taken completely out of his hands. He doesn't really like that. He's going to be on this damn train for a while and there's nothing to do.

[Ryoji may be the only person on this train to look thrilled. Yes, there is at least one person here that's super excited to be dead and going on the pathway to reincarnation. Why?

His friends are safe. They're safe and they won. The world won't stop because of the mere fact that he existed. And this way... well, this life has to be better for him than the last one, right?

His thoughts sober slightly when he thinks of the one person who also died as a result of this mess... someone who, unlike him, didn't deserve that. She deserved to live her life happily, with her friends, but... maybe she'd have an easier time in this next life, too.]

[The angry looking skeletal warrior is drawn to this bright and energetic person. Mostly because he's one of the few ones here that doesn't look some mixture of angry, resigned and disappointed. He sits next to him with his hands folded in his lap, bright brochure tucked neatly between his bony fingers.]

You seem joyous. Do you too have a reason to relish another chance?

[Eren is staring through the window by his seat, uncharacteristically quiet and subdued. The way he sees it, there's not much point in getting worked up about things now. He's dead, and that means he's done. Done fighting, done worrying, done hating things. All that's left now is to see what lies in store next.

Well, he knows a little about what's next. A second life is not something he would have expected, but he doesn't mind. He's skimmed the brochure enough to see that this other him will live in a world without titans. That's enough for him.]

[Zangetsu just sort of stares at the kid for a while before saying anything]

Oi, brat.

Aren't you a little young to be catchin' this train yet?

[Oh, are some people upset here? Sorry about that, but not this man. Oh no, definitely not. After all, this is all how it's supposed to be, isn't it? You die and pass on, die and pass on, get reborn in new worlds with new lives but the same soul, the same center. You change, but the things that matter can't be taken away.

The only upsetting part is that he can't see a single mention of his brother, as if Fai isn't supposed to be a part of this new life. But he does see the word "adopted" there, and the idea that the other part of his soul won't be there somehow is senseless. He'll just have to find him. And until then... well, Kurogane will be there. That helps.

So now he's chattering aimiably to anyone who will stand still for long enough listen, laugh loudly if someone makes a joke, grab way too many snacks from the passing trolley and then share, and occasionally hang upside down from his seat by his knees like an over-active four-year-old. He doesn't mind being dead at all. He had a long life, a good life in the end, with people he loved; in his future life he can see none of the misery and heartbreak he'd suffered when he was young. It is, in face, an adventure of sorts, and Fai has nothing against that at all.

Although... well, dancing around without clothes certainly sounds interesting, but also rather unexpected to say the least. Well, we live and learn.]

Well, at least the young human is having fun? He seems to have caught the interest of a robotic man, watching him with an expression of bemusement over the handful of papers he's leafing through.

[ Sora's had some time to get reacquainted with his old (young?) body - dying peacefully in your sleep doesn't happen at the front end of your life, after all - and he's putting it to good use. He's bouncing between cars, searching seat by seat for some people in particular, his afterlife brochure stuck in one of his many pockets. After all, they had the gall to go first and leave him behind. It was his sworn duty to chase them down and give them a piece of his mind. Or, you know. Not.

Buuut if he sees some sad stranger with no friends who looks confused and upset, he'll crash into the seat right next to them and give them a huge smile. After all, if someone looks lonely and he's got the power to change that, why not? ]

Hey! This seat taken? [ ... Sora, ask first before plopping. Gee whiz. ]

[Men Kili can handle. He's used to Men, even if this one is wearing the strangest clothing Kili's ever seen (and he went through Bilbo's closets when they visited Bag End) and has the oddest hair. He shifts as best he can, cursing Orcs under his breath]

*Caren lived long enough to be old, but she still doesn't look happy. Most of them aren't. She busies herself looking at other patrons (creeping in the shadows as always) and eating piles of complimentary snacks.*

Vriska remembers how she died well enough. She just doesn't remember how she got here. Her ghost died too, presumably? Whatever. It was obviously incredibly heroic and cool and probably happened automatically when they she beat Lord English. Single-handedly. Yeah!!!!!!!!

She's too busy to give much of a shit about it right now. She's furiously scribbling in her brochure with one of her many note-taking pens, occasionally breaking off to think and putting the pen in her mouth. Or resting it in the curved crook of her left horn. Either works.

Apparently, her reincarnation is in need of a lot of modifications. These guys take requests, right?

"I don't think we're supposed to be changing those."

Okay, that's a little boy scout-y, even for him.

"I mean, I don't think it's going to do anything." He gives her changes a sideways glance. Somehow, he seems to be able to see them quite well from a few seats away.

"Also, I don't think the number of exclamation points will influence anything, either."

[At peace after dying isn't something Kratos ever imagined happening. Becoming a tortured anguished soul existing in the worst hell definitely, but sitting here and being content, being en route to reincarnation rather than eternal torture? Unimaginable, but nice. So nice.

He honestly looks content as he flips though one of the brochures, the overly belted outfit on his person being torn and bloodied. How had he died? Fighting to save the world. The details remain hazy at best but the only way death could have come was through battle. Perks of no longer aging being you only have so many ways you can die. And he did. Once upon a time he had wanted to die and now that he finally is dead, well, getting reborn has a nice ring to it.

Maybe in the next life he could see them again, too. Okay, that thought gets a smile out of him. Part of him wanted to think he didn't deserve that, but the other part manages to remind him that both Anna and Lloyd would yell at him for thinking that. Yeah, this all feels nice.

Though this brochure has to be the tackiest thing. CONGRATULATIONS ON DYING!!! Who even...]

[Don't be concerned that your son doesn't look much older than the last time you saw him, Kratos. Maybe this is some afterlife thing where the souls of people you knew take on the form you'd recognize. Maybe time meant nothing here and he'd died several decades after you.

Or maybe he did die right after your last stoned Skype chat with Yuan. Hard to say.

Lloyd didn't seem too bothered about being dead. He was more interested in this cool transportation method. First he tried to look outside, but then that got boring. Then he tried to learn more about this "train" thing, but people just looked at him funny. So now he was checking out the stuff inside and all the people. There really were a lot of people on this...]

[As much as Lloyd as wanted to see him again, suddenly this didn't feel like the ideal circumstance. Not like he could say "How's everything been going lately?" or anything.

He takes a few small, stiff steps toward him, staring at the much older man all the while. Once he stop, he speaks again quietly.]

Dad?

[There's a translucent blue spirit in one of the seats on the train. Keeping still for the most part from the shoulders down, with the occasional gaze down into and along the aisle.

If this is the death he's bound for, he'd have no reason to complaint. He's wanted to live again,, so it would seem! He's needed elsewhere, that or his spirit's no longer needed in the Tome chamber; one fact's an honor, and the other is a good sign for the Earth he knows, so he imagines.

The wrongness or at least strangeness of the situation still has him anxious. On the other hand why could he be needed elsewhere shipped out of rest on the plane he'd been sent to - the way people were supposed to spend their afterlife with all preceding business and making-the-way done?

And why only him, from the looks of things - out of the Chosen, that is; that's part of what he's looking at the others onboard to confirm or disprove.]

*Someone's looking very tensely at you. Someone carrying a whip, an axe, and a whole lot of holy water. *

A ghost beyond our own dead condition?

[Fuu's lived a nice, long life, she thinks. While she looks around for someone she recognizes, she's not too interested in spotting anyone. After all, that means someone else she loves is dead and that's... well, while it's not entirely heartbreaking, it's entirely possible their lives didn't end well.

Instead she looks out the window, examining the papers she was given. It's a much more... quiet life than her last one. Similar, but not the same. A new name, a new life. She tucks her hair behind her ear... she wonders how many people from the last she'll meet again. It's only once she studies it thoroughly that she finally starts to move around, keeping an eye out for people she might meet again.]

How long do you think the ride will be? [It's not complaining--it's small talk.]

I hope we have a little time to catch up, at least.

[ Oh that's a familiar voice, isn't it? And familiar blue hair and eyes and clothes, and even familiar arms being crossed, though Umi can hardly even attempt to look annoyed with Fuu like she used to. ]

Either time works backwards here or I just managed to miss walking by you about a dozen times... Fuu.

[ Sighing, she gives up on copping an attitude, and sits next to Fuu, reaching for her hand. ]

[ Annie's brochure remains unopened and she sits staring straight forwards in her seat. She doesn't remember anything after the crystal, and it's pointless to wonder about how she got here. A couple of errant thoughts about whether or not she ever made it back home float lazily through her head, but are quickly dismissed.

There's no point thinking about what already happened, or what's coming next. She can't change any of it. As such, she's going to sit here and look distinctly uninviting. ]

[He's not exactly surprised to see Annie here. His memories might be a little vague after a certain point, but it makes sense that she'd be here.

And even though he has no idea what he could possibly say to her, especially in this situation, he sits down in the seat opposite her.]

[ Giant pirate ferret in one of the seats? Giant pirate ferret in on of the seats. She's actually spread out across two seats, her back against the wall and her footpaws crossed as she peruses the brochure. The odd part is that she was damn certain that nobeast taught her how to read, but here she is, skimming words like it's nothing. Well. At least it was a blessed short thing.

... She also has huge, gaping slashes and claw and bite marks over her, as though she died wrestling an alligator made of swords. She looks up and addresses no one in the car in particular. ]

S'what you're tellin' me is that I'm gettin' brung back and I've gots to wait on this cursed seat with me back in this state until we get there? [ ... She crumples up and throws her brochure across the aisle. ] Hang that and curse the creature who thought of it! Let me off at hellgates, ye quivering imbeciles!
