[Killian, while usually polite, is still a six year old.

That's why he squints up at the kid on the monkey bars and asks]

Are you a girl?

[Ariel who had been hanging upside down with her knees over the monkey bars and her ankles locked under another rung looked upside down at Killian curiously. Of course she was a girl! Wasn't it obvious?]

Duh! What else would I be?

[youngestone]

A boy! Cuz you got hair like a boy an' none of my cousins'll climb monkey bars so I didn't know girls could climb monkey bars.

[sylvanguard]

You got lame cousins!

[She swings up to grab a bar while disentangling her legs so that she could drop down without landing on her head.]

Mom cuts my hair short because I get it tangled all the time. I'm not allowed gum anymore cos of it.

[youngestone]

[He frowns]

They're not lame! They're my friends, too! Why d'you get it tangled all the time?

[sylvanguard]

Are too! [Ariel runs her hands through her short hair, ruffling it so it's all mussed up.] I dunno. I just play and it gets tangled.

So whatcha doin'?

[youngestone]

Nothin'.

[He glances down at his shoes]

I can't reach the bars an' no one'll help me up!

[sylvanguard]

[She gives him a look like WHUT? and then shrugs.] I'll help you! They're fun to play on.

[Without waiting to hear if he'll accept her help, she laces her fingers together to make a step for him and crouches down, ready to boost him up.]

[youngestone]

[He starts to say he's fine, he doesn't want to play on them anyway because they're stupid, but then she's offering him a boost and.

Well.

Killian giggles and steps into the girl's hands, wobbling a little but reaching for the bars anyway. Finally!]

[sylvanguard]

[She straightens a little bit just so that she could give him that extra oomf up to the bars.]

Now you gotta cross 'em! It's easy. One hand and then the other!

[youngestone]

What if I can't?

[He glances down and oh okay that was a bad idea he feels a little dizzy now. He promptly looks back up, dangling from the bars]

I dunno if we got any bandaids!

[sylvanguard]

Bandaids? [THis kid was weird. Why'd he need bandaids?]

Sure you can. Give it a go!

[Shes not big enough to catch him if he falls, but the fall isn't so bad. She's done it lots of times!]

[youngestone]

If I get hurt!

[Duh. But she helped him get up here and she's been nice so far so Killian takes a breath and swings.

He gets it! And the next one and the next one and then slips and falls with a cry, bonking his head against the ground. It's not enough of a fall to concuss him or anything, but he's sniffling.]

[sylvanguard]

Oh dude! [She crouches down next to him and pokes him.] You okay? Want me to get your mommy?

[youngestone]

N-no! She's asleep an' my auntie said she doesn't need t'get woken up today!

[Still sniffling]

But my head hurts!

[sylvanguard]

[She feels bad her fellow kid got hurt because of her, and also guilty. She doesn't want to get into trouble.]

Okay uhm, want me to kiss it better? It's what my mommy does when I scraped my knee. [She shows him the scraped knee through her torn jeans. That battle injury had happened yesterday.]

[She will suffer cooties if he stops his almost crying.]

[He eyes the girl a little warily before glancing down at his shoes again, rubbing the spot he hit]

If it'll work an' I don't hafta wake up Mama.

[sylvanguard]

Whats wrong with your mamma anyway? [Ariel gives him a quick little kiss were he hurt himself on the head. Being a kind of awkward and shy about it herself.]

Did that work?

[youngestone]

....maybe.

[It's hurting less, anyway. He's not done sniffling, but either way]

She was sick last night, I dunno way. She's always sick in April though.

[sylvanguard]

[Wow he is a lot easier to make feel better than Claire. She'd still be screaming her head off at this point.]

Best make sure! [She gives him another kiss and then call it done, because wow cooties!]

Sorry to hear about your mamma. Hope shes okay! I'm Ariel.

She will be! I think, Gran says she will be anyway.

[He actually kinda blushes at that second kiss--girls he's not related to are weird--but he grins]

Oh that's okay then! Hey you wanna go play somewhere else since you cant do the monkey bars? We could go on the slide!

[She is hoping he is just as adventurous as her so they could do some fun stuff together.]

[youngestone]

[He's not really, but most of the other kids think he's a little weird so he jumps at the chance to actually have a friend!]

Or the swings? I'm really good at swinging!

Swinings good! I like to go really high and then jump off! Mom says I'm not allowed to anymore tho. Says I'll hurt myself.

[youngestone]

You might an' then you'll bleed an' I'll have to go find your mama an' then we won't get to play anymore.

[He makes a face]

No jumping off? We can still go really high, though.
