THE SAVE THE EARTH COMIC-CON PANEL




Save the Earth, the unexpected hit television show known for managing to juggle tons and tons of characters each with their own plotlines and bizarre "preincarnation" stories has come to Comic-Con! The cast has assembled for a Q&A panel as well as screenings of never-before-seen blooper and possibly some teaser footage that may give some insight into who and what the characters are becoming.


How To Play!
1. This meme assumes that all character canons don't exist in this reality. They've all been created for the show
2. Post with your character. You are now writing the character's "actor" in this strange meta-universe. Include their real name and a little bit about where they came from. Are they a fan favorite? A newcomer to television lucky enough to get their start on such a successful show?
3. Post anonymously (or not) to ask fan questions of other characters! Everything from the ordinary to shipping stuff to creepy and weird. Talk about the show, hint at characters' preincarnations and tease audiences about the crazy stuff future Echoes will bring. Talk about what actors you like to work with and who you can't stand to be around. Tell stories of pranks and shenanigans on set!
4. Or just do whatever you want to do. I don't know. I'm not your boss.

Phillip -> Matthew Harris

[Phillip's actor, Matthew Harris, as is the norm with children, is a little bit older than his character- he's just about hitting that super awkward age to be a child actor when they start to go through puberty. Still, in comparison to some of his fellow transferring child stars, he's doing quite well.

However, given that he's playing a relatively innocent character, the fanbase is a bit torn- he's either a total gary stu who's going to wind up being ~THE CHOSEN ONE~, or he's fucking precious and oh my god they're just going to ruin him aren't they I can't wait.]

Maya ==> Helen Anderson

[Helen's character is pretty much known as BADASS GRANDMA and COOL OLD LADY through most of the fandom -- she's not been in the show very long but man shit she's so damn cool

everyone's already dead convinced that Maya IS Nerida, but Helen has stated again and again that it's close... but not quite.]

[Fans have also begged for a real version of The Starheart Key, and there's at least three different fanfic versions out there. The studio has considered commissioning a real one, but... meh.]

Really, the main differences between her and Chris is that Lena isn't an engineer and she's known for being kind of an angry loud feminist / LGBTQ activist

She TOTALLY saunters out onto the stage to the tune of Highway To the Danger Zone wearing plastic kid's toy versions of Chris' robot arms and dark sunglasses. She's in a suit and tie. And...]

[Some people don't like Miles. He's a terrible little shit after all, and some people cant wait to see him fuck off. But some people actually do, because he's flipping adorable and he's just a troubled teen anyway. So the fanbase is torn on him.

The Scrappy/Tag-along Kid or Badass in Training? Who knows?

The fans though, the ones who really like him, they can be a little loud in showing it. It embarrasses his actor, Evan Hamilton, a little because he's so not used to this because he's new to the scene, but he's putting his game face on for this anyway, a shy smile for the audiences.]

[ Giggles ensue, as well as frowning amongst many of the other fans and eye-rolling from the other cast members. Kira, Kallie's actress sitting a few seats away from Evan, promptly does a pretty good impression of her character when presented with something preposterous, her expression flat as she tilts her head. ]

Neku -> Hikaru Mirimoto

[Hikaru's past jobs have mostly been in voice-acting for anime and bit parts in a few J-dramas and kid shows, so this is his big break out. He has a couple hang over fans from the otaku fanbase, but for the most part this is pretty new to him. Mostly his fanbase finds him adorably awkward.

The same can mostly be said for his character, though fanfic likes to take a touch more badass to him, or makes him a total artsy wuss. Either way, though, the awkward adorable thing usually stands.]

Toni >> Maki Kuzunoha

[No one knows who the fuck this character is. She's literally just arrived at the last part of the season, and even then she was more of the "Officer Friendly" type, helping out that Suzaku kid during his accident.

She looks more like a throwaway character than anything else, a one-scene wonder, so why does Maki Kuzunoha, former child star in Japan, have a seat at this panel? Is there more to this police officer than what's been seen so far?]

Nick Burkhardt --> Darryl Kessler

[Nick's mostly too new to have a universal fan opinion, but there's definitely some speculation on his true involvement, given his current loyalty to the police.

Darryl himself is pretty much exactly like Nick's pre-reincarnation personality - flirty, snarky, gets along with just about everyone, occasionally plays pranks on set. He's been on a number of other things, but never for very long, and has a reputation for being open and approachable with fans.]

Kairi -> Michelle Burnes

[Michelle's mostly famous for be the clearly fanservice lead female in a chain of very popular action movies, so it's confusing the shit out of people that she's playing a sweet girl who hasn't sworn once on screen in the time she's been there.

Which is weird for her too, seriously what is this not swearing bullshit.

No one's quite sure if it's just a current-celeb cameo or not, but there's some grumbling about her not looking as hot as in the movies, to which she consistently gives the press a giant middle finger. :')]

Hi! I just wanted to ask what draws you to Kairi's character the most. What's your favorite part about playing her? Oh, sorry, that's kind of two questions.

[Julien's actor is Daniel Soga. 28 years old, he does have a very youthful face but tends to look a little older than his character when off set. His ancestry is primarily Japanese, though he does have one white grandparent and is thoroughly American. He's not quite an unknown - he's done some voice acting for dubs and videogames and performed bit parts on a few TV shows - but Save The Earth is definitely the biggest thing he's ever been in.

Daniel wears a really good wig to play Julien. His real hair is black and cropped short. Out of character he is more reserved and shyer than Jules, and he tends to be circumspect with interviews and doesn't let out a lot of personal information. People he's been around for a while, like some of his costars, he's much more relaxed around and he'll make jokes, but he tends to kind of fade into the background.

At a con, he'd be... mostly hiding his nervousness, at least from the audience, and trying to covertly be in character; Julien would be at ease in this situation, after all, it wouldn't do for Dan to look like he's terrified. It's just, well, there have been some fans... He has read some of the fanfic, guys.]

Have you put in a lot of time researching birds for this role?

Thomas => Masato Wada

[Thomas and his little group have been having their own little subplots going on. Between people recognizing eachother and monsters and heroes and it has lead to a lot of speculation from the fans. Especially since a few of them were involved with that superhero show panel during the convention episode.

Thanks to how the group is going, it has also lead to alot of shipping from the fans. Masato is on record as saying he knows how the Marvel actors feel now. Speaking of him, he's the type who wasn't into sci-fi before taking the role before, but now ... well he arrives JUST before the panel starts and carrying tons of bags from the dealer's room.]

Hajime Aikawa --> Daichi Nagasawa

[Hajime's character tends to be favored by the fandom, who are just waiting for horrible things to happen now that he's fully turned into the bug monster he's been quietly worried about since almost the beginning. Hajime's actor, Daichi, is no stranger to this sort of thing, and he's been working in various Japanese superhero shows from a very young age.

There's actually some fan speculation that Joker, the name of Hajime's bug monster form, is a nod to Daichi's tendency to play pranks on the set where the suit's concerned. He seems to rather enjoy playing a horrible giant bug monster in that regard--lots of possibilities for a good prank.]

Vanessa Carter >> Kristin Jacobs

[A total newbie to television, 23 year-old Kristin Jacobs was pretty unknown before Save The Earth aside from a few bit parts here and there. In reality, she's a far cry from her character, being much more friendly and a better sense of humor, it's actually pretty easy to get a laugh out of her. Still, she's still pretty new to television so she's a little awkward and gets a little flustered in interviews sometimes, but always with a laugh. She also has an unfortunate reputation for being easily startled.

This is her first panel ever so she's sitting at the far end, giving a little wave and a few smiles here and there.

The chatter about her character is still split on where she's going. The initial talk of her having a cliche "dark and tortured past" still exists but it's diminished somewhat. Fan theories generally have her being some kind of assassin, but whether heroic or villainous remains to be seen.]

Yeah, I'm pretty excited about some of the stuff coming up for Vanessa. I can't really give much away, but she's going to start getting some really interesting powers as she discovers new metals and we're going to get a look into her past and her preincarnation's, which I think is a pretty great story.

[She laughs, grinning.] Plus, I get to do some totally badass scenes and who doesn't love that?

So, did you have to do anything in particular to get in shape for the role?

Shiro Nakamura --> Kariya Wilkins

Shiro's actor is a Japanese-American from Hawaii named Kariya Wilkinson. He's 30 with a young face, and is a REAL LIFE ALBINO omg. He's been in a few TV shows, but Save The Earth is his first big break. He's significantly more quiet and shy than the character he plays, preferring not to interject opinions during the panel unless he's asked questions directly. He blushes a lot and hides his shyness with his water bottle. He wears his sunglasses inside and a baseball cap. He's brought his fang veneers with him if anyone wants to see him with them.

He is a fan favorite, due to his unique appearance and his character's bold attitude. Most fans are baffled by how meek he is in real life. He's also not a very good cook in real life. Fans tend to think he's turning into some sort of ghoul or weird vampire, and they've already guessed that he and Mamoru have a much deeper connection than just brothers.

That doesn't stop people from shipping them. Kariya doesn't like to comment on this.

[ Most of his roles have been in shows or movies aimed towards a younger audience, so this was a rather surprising step in his career! Originally from the United Kingdoms, he has an accent that he does a fairly good job at covering up when he's in character. His home in the United States, though, is the Big Apple.

His private life is kept fairly separated from his public one, but his fans know him to be the type to have a dry sense of humor. At least 90% of his jokes are at his own expense, though! Like the character he plays, Elliot does love animals a lot; he very consistently mentions his menagerie of pets in interviews and television appearances. He's not a vegan, though, let alone a vegetarian.

He also has a reputation for being a snappy dresser, and this appearance is no exception. He clearly knows a thing or two about fashion trends. ]

Arthur Curry --> Chet Hammer

[So Chet knows the loud, boisterous Arthur is a fan favorite, and...let's face it, he loves the attention. Chet used to be in action movies in the late 90s/early 2000s, and he knows how to work a crowd. He's famous for doing his own stunts, and he's got all sorts of stories where that's concerned.

...also, Chet Hammer is not his real name, seeing as how he changed it to make himself more marketable.]

If Arthur and [insert Chet's most famous action role here] were forced into a cage fight, who would win?

Regina Akamine -> Ami Nakamura

[So, Regina's actress is played by Ami Nakamura, a 22-year-old actress of mixed descent who's mainly known for indie films and romantic comedies where she usually plays the "sweet girl next door" and/or "manic pixie dream girl" roles. The fact that she now plays a rough and tough ex-gang member with a sharp tongue and a bitchy exterior (but a secret soft side) is actually against her type. Unlike her character, she's actually outwardly friendly and classy, always gracious to her fans who jokes around a little.

The STE fandom seems to be torn as to whether Regina is either A) a generic Strong and Independent Woman, B) a complete Mary Sue who hogs what little screentime she actually has, C) pure fanservice bait, or D) actually a character who deserves to be fleshed out more and get as many scenes as she can. While most fans forget that she exists, there is a small, but dedicated section who writes weird fanfic about her. Some of them are porn written by fanboys... yeah.

Needless to say, Ami is a bit nervous at dealing with the crazy fanbase.]

Mort Yokugawa --> Shigeru Takahashi

[Mort's actor is one of those guys who's been in a lot of shows and movies without managing to land a leading role. He's the quintessential "Hey, it's that guy!" He seems comfortable enough with the crowd, and he's content to let the bigger name stars get most of the attention.

And he actually brought Mort's creepy little doll there with him; it's sitting in a tiny chair that's an exact miniature of his while wearing suit that matches his. Could this be foreshadowing? Fan speculation is running wild.]

Don't let Bakura fool you, I love this guy. He's awesome!

[[And to demonstrate, he plants a chaste kiss on Shigeru's cheer, resulting in some very loud screeching from the fangirls in the crowd, which only makes him laugh]]

Cain Hashimoto --> Hiroto Masamune

Cain's actor is, like his character, Japanese-Canadian, but from Toronto instead of Montreal. Hiroto Masamune barely outstrips his character in age at 25, and while he's done stage and minor American television work before--along with J-drama work when he was a bit younger, having moved back to Japan for a few years--this is his first major role in English.

Where Cain is trollish and sharp-tongued, Hiroto is genuinely nice. His goggles have the fandom wondering--helped by the potential foreshadowing in one of his scenes with Mort. The fandom isn't sure what to make of him, but they're sure he's bound to be a villain.

He's sitting next to Masato, waving a little and wearing a wide grin. Hiroto is excited to be a part of this. And, naturally, those goggles are sitting on his forehead. Just to give a little tease.

Danny Fenton -> Anthony Sellick

[Danny's actor is Anthony Sellick. Anthony, like many other actors who play teenagers, is older than his character. At 24, he was blessed with permanent baby fat and a short stature that made him perfect for the role of a prepubescent weenie young teen. He mostly maintains his normal look for the role, although the color of his roots make it obvious that under the black hair dye, he is actually a natural blond.

Anthony is no big-name actor, but he's had several leading or supporting roles in moderately popular shows that were often cancelled but later became cult classics. As a result, he's quite well-known and popular in TV fandom and the fans are just waiting for him to do great things on the show. They've been speculating for a while what Danny's intangibility could mean, just how correct his conspiracy theories are, and what sort of secrets the apparently crazy Fenton family hides.

Anthony's cult popularity means he is quite familiar with going to these sorts of conventions for panels or just meeting the fans, which is why, unlike Danny, he seems so calm, relaxed, and at ease. He approaches all fan questions about his character with a casual, knowing smile and knows how to give out just the right amount of information to make the fanbase go crazy with speculation.]

John Mitchell >> Ethan Ward

[Ethan, like the character he plays, is from Ireland, but he spends most of his time in London these days. He's better known on the other side of the pond because of the television roles he's had over there, so Save the Earth is his first foray into the American acting scene.

He's one of those actors who always has a smile for the fans and has this tendency to pull people into bear hugs. Really, Ethan can easily be compared to a giant puppy--always filled with energy and always happy. He also isn't all that great at dressing up, and, well, he's shown up at his panel looking like he might have just rolled out of bed: black curls a mess, a plain dark grey t-shirt, and a pair of worn out blue jeans--but hey! At least he's not wearing flip-flops?

Oh, and he knows about Tumblr: a fan brought it up once. Thankfully, he hasn't run into anything like RPF. Yet.]

Asuka Langley Soryu -> Stephanie Nakamura

[So far known mostly for walk-on roles on teen dramedies, California-born 17-year-old Nakamura isn't nearly as intense as her character, but has a lot of savvy behind her laid-back attitude and sunny disposition, and is dedicated to making the most out of her first recurring part. She's a minor presence at the panel but enthusiastically smiles and converses with the fans whose attention she attracts. She figures the more she impresses the hardcore fans (and being a cute Asian-American teenage actress at Comic-Con makes that pretty easy), the more word of mouth exposure she'll get.]

Aaron Strider --> NOT VIGGO MORTENSEN but basically viggo mortensen

[Victor Moransen is easygoing, eccentric and gregariously affectionate with his co-stars. He's no Shakespearean actor, but he's had a pretty solid career doing mostly film acting with a couple of blockbusters under his belt. He's friendly with the fans, puts his heart into his work, and is totally fun to be around.

He enthusiastically answers questions about his character and delights in telling the fans ridiculous lies.]

[Somewhere in the crowd there is a fan with a sign. On one side: VM + DS. On the other side: Now Kiss. When called on to ask a question, someone near it helpfully points the sign out and says who the initials refer to.]

Bakura -> Richard Matsumoto

Bakura's actor is Richard Matsumoto, a half Japanese, super energetic spotlight hog. He's grinning up a storm, utterly psyched to be on this side of the con experience and often gives a very enthusiastic wave and shout out to someone in the crowd. Richard is an ascended fanboy, a giant fan of comics from both America and Japan as well as hero shows and movies and rumor has that he got the role as Bakura from a short chain of connections that put his file on the top of the stack. He's got the charisma to make it believable, and the sheer number of people he seems to know backs it up.

While Richard has been in a few small time productions, mostly school and summer stage productions, amature fils and other unpaid positions, Save the Earth is his first big-- and paid! gig and he's loving every second of it. No question is too trivial for him to natter on about and he's gotten himself quite a following on his blog where he posts candid shots and answers any ask, even if not always seriously and often without giving a proper answer.

He brought a stack of business cards with his blog and public contact info and has been handing them out (and signing a few when asked), has posed for tons of photos and has let so very many fangirls play with his hair. It's real! Just bleached.

Anthony -> Claude Cameron

[Claude, presently seventeen, was only especially noted by association for a couple of roles in cult-classic films in his pre-adolescent years prior to Save the Earth - he came onto its early cast intensely excited to be taking on his first big - or at least long-term! - and "serious" role, in terms of character type (he's expressed that it's actually fun getting into the mode to play a bit of a nervous wreck) and otherwise.

Given his previous experience, Claude is used to playing the cutie for the fans and anything but camera-shy - and while he's still easygoing and speaks with a bit of a stutter, and a bit modest especially regarding what is - again! - his biggest role to date - he's much more upbeat and lax and more of a jokester than his character is, and is also more of a geek - he's a gamer and in fact has a taste for horror films. He enjoys slipping half-into character for a bit of self-deprecating deliberate melodrama in interviews, etc., and is liable to spend as much of the day as is remotely practical in his zombie makeup.

In fact he's in it right now! Although it doesn't have quite the same effect as it does in-character what with the way he's grinning and chuckling as much as he is.]
